Best museums in Austin: find options near you

Bullock Texas State history museum is a great place to visit for kids to learn about Texas and America history. The general admission is $15/adult. The museum makes a great summary of how Texas is becoming. I went through the museum for about an hour or so. It gave a flash back of the great prices Texas pays for today’s prosperity. It also reveals the pride of being a texan. It is a great place to educate the youth to value their life and in some way encourage them to do better in the future. In short, I strongly recommend it for family visits, especially those with kids.

I had the absolute pleasure of visiting the Bullock Texas State History Museum for the first time—and wow, what an experience! From the moment I walked in, I was greeted by two incredibly kind and welcoming gentlemen, Don and Joseph. They took the time to explain what was inside the museum, answered all my questions, and made me feel right at home even before I bought my ticket.

Once inside, I was completely captivated. The museum takes you on a powerful journey through the rich and complex history of Texas—starting with Indigenous cultures and Mexican independence from Spain, all the way to the modern era. Every exhibit was thoughtfully curated and packed with fascinating artifacts.

I left feeling inspired, informed, and eager to return. If you haven’t been yet, it’s a must-see—truly a Texas treasure!

We came here to learn more about Texas history and see some really neat artifacts. It wasn’t too busy at all on Juneteenth and the parking was very easy. Total of 3 floors filled with great history about the state. I would recommend doing this and touring the state Capitol as it’s pretty close.

The place to go to get the skinny on the history of Texas. The shipwreck exhibit of the Belle on the main floor is fascinating. Don’t forget to swing by the gift shop to get the annual Texas State Capitol Christmas ornament. We have for each year since moving to Texas

Super neat museum. Three levels. Cafe and shop. Two theaters and a side traveling exhibit that changes out to different exhibits. Lots of nest Texas history. Very well spaced out. You don’t feel crowded. Interactive items.

I spent like three hours here with my dad and brother who are both museum nerds (me too but I don’t take as long). This is actually an amazing American history museum about Texas and I learned plenty about it here. Air conditioning was outstanding and they have a cafe and gift shop as well.

The other reviews made it much more hype than reality. Other than some cool artifacts and recreations, the museum lacked interactive pieces. It’s not a bad museum overall. However, the abundance of visual print as a primary source of information made the experience dull. Despite my photo collection, this is still a history museum, and the majority of it is just that.

While the price for three was a bit steeper than we expected, our daughter had an absolutely amazing time here! The interactive activities could easily keep kids busy for hours, and we even had fun playing alongside her at the various displays. Her favorite spot was definitely the outdoor river system and play area. A pro tip: bring a water bottle for that section, as it can get hot even with the shade!

Our children were just outside the range of perfection. Our son is 11 and found some of the activities interesting but not for too long, and our daughter is 7 months old and enjoyed grabbing everything and putting it in her mouth. Still a great experience

We had a wonderful time at Thinkery! Our 1.5-year-old daughter absolutely loved it—so many hands-on activities and interactive spaces perfect for little ones. It’s a fun, engaging, and educational spot for kids. Highly recommend for families visiting Austin!

Had a great time, kiddo loved all the different types of engaged activities to do. Time well spent and even tired out the kiddo at the end. It was nice to sit back and see the kiddo explore. Definitely coming back! Great for a family with multiple kids for sure!

Our toddler definitely enjoyed the 2 hr special toddler time they have. She absolutely loved the water features. We would love to go back and explore the rest of the museum.

We had the best time here, and with all day tickets we’re able to come for the morning and then come back that afternoon. There is a ton to do in the area around the Thinkery and more than enough to do inside. Definitely a must-see if you are in town with kids.

A beautiful, well-curated museum that surprised me in the best way. The mix of classical, modern, and Latin American art feels fresh, thoughtful, and balanced. It’s not overwhelming, but it definitely makes you stop, look, and feel.

The space itself is stunning—full of light, bold architecture, and immersive installations. Some rooms feel almost spiritual in how they’re arranged.

The Blanton Museum is a must-visit in Austin. It has an impressive collection of art ranging from European classics to contemporary works, plus unique rotating exhibitions. The building itself is beautiful and easy to explore, with plenty of space to enjoy the art without feeling crowded. Highlights include the modern installations and the stunning architecture of the atrium. A great place to spend a few hours and appreciate world-class art right in the city!

Absolutely phenomenal! The spaces for exhibits were clean, quiet, and spacious enough for us to always feel comfortable like we had plenty of room. The variety of pieces on exhibit was lovely! I also enjoy the representation from artists of different backgrounds. The art was compelling and thought provoking and even the spaces outside were lovely. I would absolutely recommend the Blanton Museum of Art!

On Tuesdays you can visit the museum for free (At least for Austin residents, but I believe it’s for everyone else as well)!

We had an amazing time at this museum with our 7-year-old daughter! She’s at an age where she’s starting to appreciate art, and this was the perfect introduction. The exhibits were truly interesting and sparked so many questions from her. Overall, the museum was clean, scenic, and thoroughly enjoyable.

This art museum is incredible. The art pieces are beautiful, clean, and a fresh of breath air. They artists do an amazing job working your brain in understanding the more abstract pieces. The time pieces are done with such attention to detail and meticulousness, they are all very impressive. The ceramic work is also very beautiful. Without a doubt, you’ll walk out of here mind blown. The creativity, the attention to detail, and the overall sophistication of the art pieces is on another level.

We had such a wonderful experience visiting the LBJ Presidential Library! Lots of exhibits of LBJ’s presidency – we especially loved the smaller-scale oval office! The library is beautiful & the staff is very informative! They offer various discounts & I didn’t fit into any of the criteria – my ticket was $16 and I definitely believe it was worth it. It took us about 1.5 – 2 hours to go through. 10/10

As a foreign visitor, some of the content didn’t feel as close or personal to me—but I still found it engaging and very informative. The museum presents LBJ’s legacy with honesty, showing both the achievements and the controversies.

The museum begins with a powerful timeline that tracks LBJ’s life alongside major events in U.S. and world history. It sets the tone perfectly and really grounds you in the era. The Vietnam 1968 exhibit was incredibly moving—thoughtfully curated and emotionally resonant, it gives a deep and nuanced view of such a complicated time.

The next floor continues the journey with exhibits on JFK’s assassination, the Civil Rights Movement, and LBJ’s landmark Great Society programs. It’s informative, immersive, and at times deeply personal.

Even though the actual archives aren’t open to the public, their towering presence between the museum levels adds a real sense of weight and importance to the space. And at the top? A stunning recreation of LBJ’s Oval Office—elegant, detailed, and incredibly cool to stand inside.

Highly recommend making time for this if you’re in Austin. It’s not just a presidential library—it’s a powerful, well-crafted look at a transformative period in American life.

This was such an enjoyable experience. The employees are knowledgeable and are able to give facts you’ll find interesting. The space was easy to navigate and there is plenty to see, so make time to see it all! My personal favorite was seeing Lady Bird’s office with the magnificent view of downtown Austin. They have a great amount of video experiences as well. Fantastic experience!

A must see museum! So beautiful and full of wonderful history. The staff is so friendly and informative as well. The entry ticket and gift shop are fairly priced as well. Unlike other museums. Just an all around great experience. I loved it! I recommend going if you haven’t already!

Impressive!! Great collection and wonderful presentation of LBJ’s and Lady Bird’s public service. Terrific collection of 60s artifacts. We arrived at 11am on a Saturday, no problem with weekend crowds.
The special exhibition right now about Vietnam (October 2024 – August 2025) is good, poignant, creative.

I had my wedding at Umlauf Sculpture Garden on May 3, 2025. I cannot think of a more magical location for a venue. The whole day felt like a fairy tale because of the lush greenery, babbling brooks, and elegant sculptures.

Pros:
They let me visit as many times as I wanted
They answered no fewer than 200 of my emails
The coordinators were so sweet and easy to work with
The venue is gorgeous.

Some quick notes:
The event rental is only from 4 PM – Midnight, including load in and load out and the amplified sound has to be off my 10. This means extra charges for delivery timing, usually only about an hour and a half of dancing, and other specialized coordination. If you use their preferred vendors, then they can let them come in at 3:30. However, there was a lot of confusion on my wedding day and it set us 30 minutes behind the whole night, which is huge. Working with this venue can be a bit of an undertaking which I underestimated, so just something to note!

That all being said, I do not regret my decision to have my wedding here! It was a lovely night.

We loved visiting the garden. It was hot outside, but there is plenty of shade surrounding the garden. There is a nice waterfall to sit near. Great information on each sculpture.

The artist was very talented! Would go again when I visit Austin

Very affordable ticket prices! Parking can be rather difficult, but the garden is surprisingly spacious and nice to walk around. I went to the Lunar New Year event they had during closing hours, which does cost more than usual to attend, but the special effects on the dragon dance was pretty cool.

We were looking for cheap things to do during our trip and are so glad we found this place. We had fun going on a little scavenger hunt to find certain statues. My little niece was excited each time she found one on her paper. It was a nice little walk in nature as well. Highly recommend visiting.

Visited on a family day with free admission and was surprised by how much this little garden offers! I always pass by the garden and peek from outside, but there are more sculptures hidden among plants and trees to be discovered in the garden!!!
It just made me feel zen and relaxing by sitting down on a bench listening to the wind and water! The paths, plants, and ponds are so well planned. They have many activities today, like chess, arts and crafts, story time, and pottery. The staffs are super friendly too! Will definitely come back visit again.

The natural “forest like” setting for these sculptures made for a quiet, relaxing stroll through some extraordinary art pieces. I was disturbed a bit by proportions and eye treatments, but the overall exhibit is a must. Many pieces will stay with you long after the visit as the emotion within each sculpture are easily conveyed… sad and joyful.

My partner and I were in Austin for a layover and saw that this museum was free on Sunday and I decided to go in. We loved it. It was very welcoming, the art was beautiful, it highlighted amazing Latinx artists, and has an amazing gift shop. Would definitely recommend visiting as it’s an affordable cultural experience.

This time we went they were in the middle of staging a new gallery, so we mostly had access to just the store. They did have a TV playing slides of all the work and different displays they had set up over time, amazing work. I’ve been here several times. I can see there has been thought and intuition that goes into the way they build out their displays and make artist selections. This is not just a random gallery. There’s a lot of heart and soul that goes into what they do here. The only way to understand it is to see it in person. They still had some cool little pieces to look at while the gallery was being updated. We bought some little gift store things we thought were cool. Staff is always 10/10

Occupying a single floor, Mexic is small: a mere handful of rooms. Given that size, the $8 admission seems like a reach. Look past that, however, and Mexic offers unique art ranging from murals to photos to an elaborate room-sized nativity display. The gift shop is well worth a look as well.

As museums go, Mexic-Arte’s size and scope are underwhelming. However, this place serves an important mission and gives you a chance to see art you probably won’t find elsewhere.

This is a lovely little museum, with a caring and devoted staff. They regularly host events that are great opportunities to enjoy art and socialize with other art lovers. I cannot recommend this place highly enough.

There is normally an admission fee, but we were able to get in free admission because of a concert they had. I would recommend signing up for their email newsletters to keep you in the loop about events there. The people upfront were super helpful and friendly. The space is filled with art from all over artisans in Mexico. Everything is on display and I would definitely recommend this for all tourist and locals to check out. The gift shop is a great place to go and grab a birthday card or a birthday gift, if you are a part of the Mexican culture, you will love this place. They had a Huapango concert, I mean, that is very unique!

Tiny museum. Interesting art works but poor descriptions. The art was hung on the wall with a list of artists and their artwork on the side but you couldn’t tell which was which. The whole visit took us 20 min. If you’re in the area and have half an hour to spare, it’s worth it. Nice shop of the museum.

We had the pleasure of exploring the Texas Science & Natural History Museum on Community Day (the last Sunday of every month, when admission is free). From start to finish, the experience was seamless check-in was quick, and the souvenir shop was stocked with unique treasures that made it hard to walk away empty-handed.

The exhibits span from the first floor all the way up to the fourth, each level offering something special. Personally, the fourth floor fashion exhibit stole my heart it was a stunning blend of history and creativity. My kids, on the other hand, couldn’t get enough of the basement full of bones, fossils, and interactive puzzles. It was the perfect mix of learning and play.

Overall, this museum is a true gem in Austin. Whether you’re a fashion lover, a science enthusiast, or simply looking for a fun family outing, there’s something here for everyone. And with Community Day making it accessible to all, it’s definitely an experience worth sharing with your family.

This museum is fantastic! It’s a perfect family outing with a fun scavenger hunt for kids and tons of interactive exhibits. The dinosaur and fossil collection is absolutely incredible and a must-see.

My three year old and I came here on a Tuesday and he loved it! The dinosaur bones exhibit was his favorite but the animals on the third floor were a close second. My only complaint is there’s no free parking from what I could tell but that’s not the museums fault. I could’ve stayed longer to read about all the things but my kid is not so patient. We’ll definitely be back because he keeps talking about wanting to go again!

Texas Science & Natural History Museum is a fairly compact museum for a name that implies something much larger. The entire experience is spread over four levels, beginning with a lower-level floor you descend into after entering. This is where the main dinosaur exhibit is located—skeletons of species that once roamed the land now known as Texas. The space is tightly packed, and the number of visitors makes it feel even more crowded. It might have made more sense to distribute the dinosaur displays across the first and lower floors, as the first level features a spacious atrium with only two dinosaur skeletons and little else.

Also on the first floor, you’ll find a museum store and a small theater showing a video about the shifting geography of Texas—how it was once underwater and moved across the globe over millions of years due to continental drift. The exhibit gives a decent idea of what kinds of creatures could have lived in the region through time.

The third floor is dedicated to the animal life of Texas, though again, the space is quite limited. It’s essentially a hallway with a few side rooms where you’ll see local mammals, a small insect corner, and a separate bird room. The fourth floor appears to be more of a temporary exhibit space, which during our visit featured mannequins dressed in themed clothing—possibly part of a fashion exhibit.

While it’s informative and makes the most of its space, Austin clearly deserves a more spacious, modern, and technologically advanced natural history museum. This one feels more like an introduction than a destination.

I wish I could sit here and explain everything that I saw but I definitely can’t. It was super cool to walk through the museum and learn about all of the history. There was also a professor who walked us through the common bones between humans and animals which was super neat. Will definitely return here one day!

Very nice museum! It’s rather small, but it’s got a scavenger hunt you can do to earn a free sticker which makes the experience a bit more fun. My favorite level is probably the taxidermy animals, they are very well done and are great if you want to do some sketchbook drawing. Each biome has a well thought out scene, and beautiful painted backgrounds which extend the physical foliage into the distance. The museum also hosts different events throughout the year. And has an enjoyable gift shop.

My kids had a great time. We went for homeschool day and I expected more actors to be around and on the different farms. The actors there for the most part did a fantastic job and answered the kids questions and demonstrating life on the farm in the 1800s. We did end up walking through the pumpkin nights stuff with trails not well marked on where to go. Overall it was an okay experience and the few farms open with actors made it nice. Wish there was more actors around and better signage of places to go.

We visited today with our grandchildren and loved it. We learned quite a bit a lot about what it might be like to live in the area in the 1800s just by wandering around. The kids, 3 and 5, were fascinated by a world very different from their own less than a mile away. The 3 year old said she’d like to have a horse and buggy to go places. They especially liked the chickens, donkeys and longhorns and were perplexed by the outhouses, water pumps and living quarters. I even got to see and hear a couple wild birds I had never seen with the help of the Merlin app to identify them. It’s a great place to explore.

I went and did the Intro to Blacksmithing class at Pioneer Farms since I was curious about blacksmithing. It was fun and tiring. The weather was colder which made it tougher overall but still rewarding. The instructor gave us step by step directions and off we went. The class is done a large group at individual coal forges. We had to work in pairs but that wasn’t an issue. Bring some snacks and be ready to work a bit. If you watch the competition shows and want to give it a try this is a great place to do it.

Our family recently visited the Jourdan Bach Pioneer Farm and had an absolutely wonderful time. This living history museum offers a fascinating glimpse into life in Texas during the 1800s.
The historic buildings have been preserved and restored.
My son was particularly captivated by the farm animals like donkeys and longhorns!

Really great preserved pioneer town. People working there were great. I didn’t really see much farms mostly pioneer. But does a good job showing you how it might have been 100 years ago which is awesome.

There was insufficient food in the market section.
The farm covers a very large area. It is impossible for the elderly to walk everywhere. I wish there was a trailer for the farm tour.
Other than that, the historical houses were nice.
3 of them were closed. We couldn’t visit them.
We went to the office and paid for two adult entrance tickets.
But many people did not go to the office and pay for the ticket.

Hidden Gem

Happen to come here for Museum Day. Never heard of it and it’s wasn’t on my radar. What a nice little surprise. It’s a quaint museum with only two exhibits. One on American Slavery and the other on a rotating schedule. Riley Holloway’s What I Carry exhibits was currently being displayed.

Surprisingly there’s no George Washington Carver exhibit outside of the children’s room.

You’ll spend 20 minutes tops here.

If you are in the area and have time to kill stop in by. It’s also free!

Okay. So my cousin and I had a cousin’s weekend and we decided to come down for the June celebration at the George Washington Carver Museum. Another friend of mine came down also that day and when we got out there, the place is really beautiful. There was a bunch of people out there. Once we got in they checked our bags they gave us passes as wristbands. If you were getting any type of a alcoholic beverage, you got another wristband for that also.
As you walk in. There were food trucks and different people everywhere that had kids, teenagers, families it was a beautiful site seeing everyone out. There were all types and people singing on the stage. Everything was out here, including the Sun. It was so hot that day. So my cousin and my friend, we grab some food. We sat down on the side of the building where there was a shade and ate. I do have to say I stopped at this.
Called Sweeter Than Sour drink vendor and got my friend a strawberry lemonade and got myself a peach mango strawberry lemonade. They put alot of ice which made it,so good. While I was waiting in line, I met this beautiful young lady and I asked her could I take her picture.Her name was Amani and she was the Miss African USA Finalists pageant. You Go Lady!! As for the vendors they were selling clothes, hats, and other things. My friend and my cousin, they chose to eat barbecue. It was called Just Like Mama’s so food seafood in barbecue. I ate at anything baked potato and got a stir fry vegetable potato and added chicken and it was really good. i can’t say that we stayed a long time.Because it was really hot, but we really did enjoy the environment and the people and the food until next time.Thanks for the memories

This was an incredible experience!!!African-American History is a deep ocean that will never reach the bottom. The layout of Museum is very clean contemporary, and inspirational!

We were very disappointed. Carver did many great things. It would have been nice to see his accomplishments and his life. To me, this place was more of a community center than a museum. Oh, it’s beautiful inside, and lots to do. Museum, though, it is not. This will be reflected in the photos I share. I took 300 photos at LBJs library. Because there was that much stuff. I took 75 at a hot dog joint. Free, plenty of parking

Yesterday, I visited the George Washington Carver Museum in Austin with my sister and brother-in-law for the first time. What we discovered wasn’t simply a museum, it was a brick-n-mortar testament to the endurance, creativity, and contributions of Black people both locally and globally.

The standing exhibit honors members of Austin’s Black community, tracing their legacy and embedding their stories within the larger diaspora. My personal favorite was the inclusion of queer contributions to the community, especially through the work of Boyd Reginald Vance. It was affirming to see his legacy centered, a reminder that Black history is never one-dimensional—it is vast, layered, and inclusive.

Alongside this, the contemporary exhibition we experienced was nothing short of phenomenal. It felt less like a passive display and more like an active dialogue between past and present, bridging generations with art as the connective tissue.

What makes this place remarkable is that it’s not just a museum; it’s a multipurpose center, a space for exhibitions, education, and community. It’s the kind of cultural institution that deserves not only our visits but also our financial support. I, for one, look forward to making donations to ensure places like this continue thriving.

In a city that changes quickly, what does it mean to preserve and elevate the voices that built it? Perhaps the Carver Museum itself offers the answer: by honoring history, we create a more expansive future.

My family and I last visited this museum in 2022. We were here for a plant/seed exchange event. I definitely recommend visiting. This museum has lots of educational displays. I never knew this place existed. As someone who is biracial I definitely appreciate that there’s a museum for black history here in Austin.

We visited the George Washington Museum during the Austin Art Studio Tour 2023. This was a group show for the artists who are on the tour. Congratulations to all of those artists who sold their pieces. The prices were affordable and I wish we had attended this show the week prior. Some pieces were quite amazing, some were rather rudimentary…

Wonderful small art museum! Worth the $5 entry plus anything you can donate. Knowledgeable and wonderfully friendly staff. Love what they do and where they are. This place needs all the support to help them grow.

This museum does such an amazing job with school tours! I went as a chaperone on a field trip and was so impressed by how friendly and organized the staff was. From meeting us at the bus, to redirecting our students as soon as they stepped out of line, they did a wonderful job guiding us through the museum and giving an age appropriate tour! Highly recommend a visit.

Very cool museum! 5$ for students and seniors. There are two areas downstairs and one area on the second floor. Very cool rooftop with views of congress and the capitol building. Beautiful works of art. I will definitely be back.

Wonderful Raven Halfmoon Exhibit & gallery talk by Sculptor, Tammie Rubin. The venue is a great space for large pieces of art.

It’s not that fair to review and our museum after only seeing one exhibit, but this was a pleasant experience regardless. The art was insightful. The facilities clean and quiet. The staff was very helpful. Also the prices were not bad at all! It’s a great way to support local and Texas artist as well!

I really enjoyed my time with my mentor at this gallery space. Downtown mid-day on a Saturday is tough parking-wise and there’s no lot designated for this venue. Bought a ticket in advance, and it quick and easy to check in!

The main artist’s had two exhibits that we saw and they received tons of praise. The host behind the desk was very helpful in giving background for the work, the layout of the different experiences and also had some suggestions on what other galleries we should visit as well.

This space is much smaller than the Laguna space, from what I’ve heard/experiences. I enjoyed my time!
