Best bookstores in Austin: find options near you

BookPeople is hands-down one of the most magical places in Austin. From the moment you walk in, you’re greeted by the warm scent of paper and possibility. The staff are incredibly knowledgeable and genuinely passionate about books, they’ve recommended titles I never would’ve picked up on my own, and now they’re some of my favorites.

The store itself is a treasure trove: thoughtfully curated sections, cozy reading nooks, and an upstairs area that feels like a secret haven. Their author events are top-notch, bringing in both big names and local voices, and the kids’ section is a wonderland for young readers.

Whether you’re a lifelong bibliophile or just browsing for a gift, BookPeople makes you feel like you belong. It’s not just a bookstore, it’s a community hub, a place to get inspired, and a reminder of why stories matter.

I like the spirit & variety of the store and do hold fond memories including of a small talk with Molly Ivins a couple decades ago — but I’m really more of a used book, public library gal who typically spends under $3.50 for a single small sheet of stickers.

The book sections and employee recommendations leave a good taste though, and we found a nice gift and artisan bar soap lately! Worth a special occasional visit; and recommended for the wealthy and to folks living within walking distance. No hard feelings.

That being said, during a quiet weekday hour, the 2 non disabled women’s room toilets on the 2nd floor were clogged and gross. ‍♀️

This place was truly a book lovers cave! It has so many personalized decorations that you don’t really find in Barnes & Noble. It just so happens that I was going in on Jane Austen Day, so there was a lot of peeps, dressed for the occasion. I was able to find this great book!

The Book People is a magical place, filled with books and a thousand other interesting things you can buy. The variety of books is truly impressive. The staff is incredibly friendly, always smiling and ready to help. It’s a bookstore that makes you feel welcome the moment you walk in. They offer activities for the whole family from storytelling sessions to book presentations. I absolutely love this bookstore!

Love Book People, an Austin treasure! They also have a great website where it is super easy to order online & pick-up in store. The friendliest staff, coffee bar, cool cards & gifts, perfect location and convenient parking. Highest recommendation.

This was such an amazing book store! I thought it was 3 stories, but the 3rd story was blocked off for employees so really it’s only two, but they had so many books in those two stores! It was wonderfully overwhelming when we first entered, but everyone there was friendly and super helpful. The kids section upstairs was quite extensive and they had a huge area for story times.
We also got some coffee and snacks there which were both delicious. Parking was easy to get to and there was plenty of space.
Totally worth the visit if you don’t live in Austin, but it did make me wish I lived close enough to visit more frequently lol

If I lived here this store would have been my whole personality as a teenager. So, so many books, creatively displayed alongside an impressive collection of interesting and thematically relevant Knick knacks. Plus: clean bathrooms, a cafe, and apparently frequent author events. This bookstore feels like the kind of mysterious store full of secrets that characters always visit in fantasy novels.

I love half price books and this store is one of the best ones in Austin. I’m not sure but it might also be the first one that came to Austin, it’s been here for at least 20 years maybe 30. They obviously have tons of books, but they also have audiobooks, DVDs if anybody uses those anymore, stationary, calendars, games, and children, toys, and a good selection of rare and signed books. For donations, it’s easiest to take things in the door on the south side of the building around the corner from the main entrance, if you have a lot of books. If you have good books, you would make more selling them your yourself on Amazon or eBay, but you’d waste a lot more time doing it too. This is one of the best bookstores in Austin, I think I only like Book People better.

1/2 Price Books has always been an adventure to go to because of the unique array of books that they carry. You can never be too sure about what you’ll find for sale. No two stores are identical in inventory because of their buyback purchase programs. And that’s the best part because some of these up cycled books are great treasures, and some are truly unique finds.

They also stock a vast array of board games, card games, puzzles, electronic games, CDs, and vintage records. I particularly like checking out the writing papers, blank journals and memory books

Be sure to locate their vintage section containing old newspapers and first additions; or very scarce books.

Just don’t get too disappointed in their buyback program because in some instances, they really do give you pennies on the dollar; Other books or games you may be able to make some good money off of. They process your potential buybacks quickly. Once you’re familiar with what they’re interested in buying back when you’re an avid reader, you’ll understand which books to bring in and which ones to donate to the local Friends of the Library at your town’s public Library.

There are so many book options and it’s a bookworm’s dream to come here and find cheap books.
You can sell books here as well. They also sell puzzles for good prices.

First time visiting this location and while it seemed to have a vast selection, it was a bit confusing the way it was all organized compared to other HPB locations I’ve frequented. You would find an author in multiple areas, despite the genre being the same. Also, the alphabetizing was slightly disorderly, but that could be due to customers misplacing items. I will say that this location did also have some newer titles available upon walking in, which I thought was really great!

One Star Review for Half Price Books

I am absolutely appalled by my recent experience at Half Price Books. After the passing of a dear friend who owned a bookstore, we thought we would honor her memory by donating and selling her extensive collection of over 2,000 books, CDs, and vinyl records. When we called ahead to check if we could process these items, we were assured by a staff member named Paul that they would accept more than 20 pounds of materials even though the automated line said they will except 20 pounds of materials.
As complete novices in this process, we specifically asked how many books would equal 20 pounds and were given the green light to bring them all in. So, with three dollies full of tubs and individually wrapped books, we arrived at the North Lamar store, only to be told that our large order needed to go through an overnight processing. We were not informed that this would be a problem when we called ahead.
The next morning, we received a call stating that only one-third of our books had been scanned due to “slow computers.” We were then offered a measly $40 for our entire collection, which was insulting. We were told we could either take the cash for what had been processed, which was 21$ and take our remaining books home, or they would simply donate them without further processing. What a way to treat a grieving friend’s legacy!
To make matters worse, the staff implied that most of our books were not “good enough” to be worth anything. What does that even mean? It’s incredibly concerning to hear that our beloved collection is being dismissed as not worthy when we had no guidance on what they consider “good stuff.” The rushed decision-making and lack of respect for the sentimental value of the collection left us feeling unsettled and disrespected.
I’m left wondering if anyone else has experienced such poor treatment at Half Price Books. If you value your time, your books, or your loved one’s legacy, do yourself a favor and stay away from this place. They clearly don’t appreciate the treasures people bring in, and their customer service is sorely lacking! It was never about the money to us it was about fair customer service.

I can’t recommend buying vinyl here. I buy a lot of vinyl and visit most of the record stores in town pretty regularly. This place at least 15-20 percent high on virtually everything. On rare occasion you can find a decent deal but generally they’re higher than real record stores. I suspect they take the median price on DiscOgs tack on a few dollars that you’d pay for shipping and call it a day. They don’t seem to really consider the particular pressing or even the quality of the item.

Great book selection. Can be busy at times, specifically weekends, and parking’s a pain because they share the lot. The staff are super nice and helpful, always say hi. I had one weird moment with an employee, but it was just a misunderstanding. It’s my fave Half Price Books, but it’s a bit of a drive, so I don’t go as often as I wish.

My only complaint is that their occult section is huge; I wish they had a bigger religious section instead of all that new age stuff, but I guess that’s the local crowd, so they have to cater to them.

Great place to get Japanese pencils ✏️ and other fun items of Japan! Love coming here! 🙂

Very cool bookstore with great selection. Highly recommend visiting. Only problem is that service is non existent, the cashier was unable to even greet us when we greeted her and barked the total price at us.

It’s a great place with a ton to see with a blemish that is some of their staff, at least the one we had the disservice of meeting. I’m sure they have some great employees, we did not meet them on our visit. I try to be respectful even when people in costumer service refuse to even look at you. Won’t stop me from visiting again.

Great stationary, pen, crafting, and book store. Austin’s best spot for Asian literature of all kinds.

If you are into pens, like I am, this is your new favorite spot – other places have better specialized selections, but this is the spot for the most variety.
From Gelly Roll gel pens to one of the largest arrays of fountain pens they have the pen to meet your stylophile needs.

Such a cool store it’s unfortunate the staff are not very helpful or friendly, leaving with a disappointing experience.

Lots of knick-knacks, manga, and stationary products. My interactions with the staff were dismissive and unhelpful when I asked a simple question. They didn’t acknowledge anyone when paying customers walk in, showed no manners, and acted like providing assistance was too much of a burden.

Most of them, if not all, seemed to avoid interaction and just stayed behind the register, even if they’re not checking people out. As a customer, I expect at least a basic level of courtesy and willingness to help, but unfortunately that was not the case here.

Lovely staff and great manga selection!! Tons of Studio Ghibli, Sanrio and anime merch as well. They also have a sizable art section and my husband loved the huge selection of fun socks and enamel pins. It feels a bit crowded in the aisles when they’re busy, but I will definitely be coming back!

I LOVE this store. I’ve spent a ridiculous amount of money at this store for numerous gifts, pens and other must haves.

Ive been in the retail industry off and on for 30+ years and I know what scoping out a potential shoplifter looks like. I was not the only person in the store but it was VERY obvious they were focused on me.

I also carry a tiny purse that barely holds a tiny wallet and my keys. Where am I going to hide an art print or Sailor Moon book?

I’m not sure if they have had an increase in shoplifting. Thats not my fault. I always happily pay for the things I intend to walk out of the store with.

If I looked like some kind of degenerate, I’ll make sure to wear my nice work shoes and not my favorite falling apart sandals next time.

Next time you scope out potential shoplifters, don’t have your employees run after and tailgate them pretending to neat up the merchandise that doesn’t need to be neatened up. Yup, it was that obvious and humiliating.

I used to go to the one in NYC, so I was so happy to find one in Austin when we visited. I’m not into anime, so that’s not why I go. I love all the Japanese fashion design and craft books, interior design books, and all of the cute stationery items. My kids loved it too and found cute plushies they liked.

First time coming to Barnes and noble! I like how they organized this store! All the books were inviting me to read!!! They have some board games and fun stuffs as well!

Since the Starbucks is inside the store, you can study there as well! Love the concept!

Barnes& nobles is a great bookstore with amazing selection of not just books but also games and CDs and magazines. I had a great time hanging out here and learning about some of the Texas local publications. They have two stories and a Starbucks that makes it worth the going in and spending a long amount of time.

As a huge book lover I can always find the books I’m looking for here! One of the best Barnes & Nobles in the Austin area. It’s so fun that it’s a 2 story and has the best book shop vibe!

This location is a total gem! Not only do they have an amazing book selection, but I was seriously impressed by their music section. The anime section is huge and packed with everything from classics to new releases. And don’t even get me started on the gifts…quirky mugs, beautiful journals, and clever little finds. It really is the perfect place to grab something for a friend (or yourself). The staff is super friendly and helpful too.

Yes, I get it… it’s a B&N… you know what to expect.

What I’ve started noticing lately about the B&N stores I’ve visited is each, while maintaining the same corporate look, has had its own certain style as well. Each place has a staff that seems to put their little touches on things and I’ve started to notice I like those. Perhaps I’m just getting old.

The Horror section here was nicely done, although like so many other B&N locations, there simply is not enough selection considering how many good and great authors are now out there writing (not every reader likes to be force fed King and Koontz). It was nice to see one of the displays feature some of those newer authors, a true breath of fresh air (and I am admittedly an absolutely huge fan of ‘Boys in the Valley’ so seeing the paperback release getting the love it truly deserves made me truly smile).

I had ordered some items online to be picked up in-store and it was, as expected, quite easy and smooth.

Good location in North Austin with plenty of other options around to kill the remaining time during a lunch break run, or when out and about on a weekend.

On our quest to hit up the 10 best comic book stores in the country, two from the Austin area ended up on the list. Austin Books & Comics was a fun addition to the lineup!

We loved the unique decor, and in addition to their amazing comic and book selection – they had a great game section (like board games and card games). I think I purchased just as many games as my son did comic books. The staff was helpful when I asked questions. And it was in an easily accessible location with plenty of parking.

We happened to be driving by Austin Books and Comics and decided to stop—so glad we did! We were blown away by the size of the store and how clean and organized everything was. The wide selection is fantastic, and my son was thrilled to find some comics he’s been hunting for (Battle Beast). Every staff member we encountered was super helpful, and the manager was especially awesome, super friendly & knowledgeable. This place is a true gem for comic lovers. We’ll definitely be back!!!

This was a GREAT comics store!!! They had a few of my childhood favorites. CARtoons magazine is the greatest comic of all time for car guys!!! I asked Mia about them and she immediately blasted through the store as if they were HER favorite. She searched a couple spots before finding 5 different copies of varied vintage. I scored the two oldest of them. Then I asked her about vintage Hulk. Explained that my wife and I were looking for graduation gifts for our son. She enlisted Tim in thus endeavor. He quickly produced many great examples of super cool HULK comics. He even used his phone app to give us neat details about the different choices. His expertise was evident, and he was super polite and helpful. Great store and awesome associates.

Probably the best comic shop in Austin. Tons of back issues and major keys, super cool statues. This was probably the only comic shop we went to that was worth the entire trip. The people working there were just awesome.

First Light is my third space and I love it more than I could put into words, but I’m going to try anyway!

The incredible atmosphere of First Light is topped only by its absolutely wonderful staff. Becky, Trevor, Ben, Laura, Ryan, Eliza, Noe, Max, Ocean, Chloe, Annie, Jordan, Brandon, Jane, those who have left this past year, and many more that I can’t name in a single sentence are all the kindest people who always go above and beyond. They remember their regulars, they engage in conversation, and they are just generally so nice.

My partner and I often receive excellent book recommendations that show a real attention to our personal tastes.

Additionally, the drinks at the cafe are spectacular. The London Fog here is the best I’ve had in Austin and I recommend it to everyone. I also love the shrubs!

The events are always really well organized (shout out to Eliza and Bradley!). They had a member event earlier this year that demonstrated a beautiful sense of community centered around this space.

Speaking of the membership, it’s a great deal! It pays for itself very, very quickly.

The book selection is up to date and also has plenty of classics, including some beautiful editions. They are always happy to order something for you if they don’t have it in stock. I highly recommend reading the reviews in the children’s book section!

Finally, the recurring events like trivia night, hot dogs/biergarten, burgers, oysters, etc. are always a blast.

Great book store for new books in any genre! The staff is very helpful in providing book recommendations or assisting you with finding a certain book in-store or online.

There’s a small cafe inside that serves pastries, coffees and teas, and draft beers and wines.

They also have 4 dedicated book clubs that meet monthly to discuss that month’s book! Highly recommend joining once to see how it is 🙂

I love First Light! I come here for coffee and books or just to hang out. Very chill and friendly atmosphere. If you live nearby, I highly recommend getting the membership. You get a small discount on books and such and the best part: free drip coffee everyday. It’s such a lovely community space.

First Light Book Shop is such a cozy spot in Austin. I love coming here to read, catch up with friends, and even get some work done. They have a great selection of books and café-style food and drinks. The outdoor patio is perfect when the weather’s nice, and there’s a cute little indoor play area for kids. It’s one of my happy places!

I love a great bookstore!!! One that has really good coffee and decadent pastries is a bonus! Sat outside and thoroughly enjoyed my visit. I will surely be back!!

This is a CAFE first and a bookshop second. I think if I’d gone in realizing that I wouldn’t have been so disappointed.

It’s a beautiful space. Very lively and busy. They have chess events which is super cool, and there is a nice outdoor space.

The book selection was good, but the books felt very secondary to all the noise and activity happening in the cafe. This is probably a plus for a lot of people.

I think it’s somewhere worth visiting, but if you’re looking for a quiet, relaxing place to peruse books, this isn’t it.

What a beautiful place. Each room is so nice and peaceful. The staff was exceptionally nice and helpful. Our book club came for a field trip and loved it.

Absolutely my favorite place we went to while in Austin! Quiet just like a library but also such an inviting place.

We had wine and walked around. Downstairs are mainly newer books while the upstairs holds the older ones. We purchased a few books and just spent an hour or so reading and drinking. Highly recommend coming here. It’s also by Franklins BBQ which makes it even better!

Cute independent book store. Loved exploring all of the different rooms and that it was multilevel. Lots of places to sit. Had great wine and drink options as well.

Coffeehouse; No food. Coffee, tea, and wine. Books store: focused on fiction. Various sitting areas in the large building built in the 1800’s as a home and store. Busy foot traffic in the area on a Sunday.

The most cozy place to read a book, study, or drink some tea! They have a great selection of books, the furnishings create such a cozy atmosphere, the music is not loud at all so you can concentrate, and they have actual comfortable chairs! Their tea selection is great and they give you a little teapot! The lavender earl grey tea is to die for, I ordered it London fog style and the staff was so nice to offer steamed milk on the side so I could pour it myself while my tea steeped in the pot. I plan on coming back frequently!

This bookstore has great vibes. It has room for improvement though. There is ample space to get creative for events and increased inventory of books. My favorite part of this place are the separate rooms to go read in or visit with a small group. No one will rush you. It was a nice peaceful day and I enjoyed my coffee while browsing the rare book collection upstairs. You can sit outside on weather favorable days, if you like. I did not try any of the food, so I can’t report on that, but I did order a coffee which came from a machine that makes coffee drinks…no barista experience needed to press a button. The person behind the bar completely forgot about my drink order. When I asked about it they quickly apologized, got my drink ready and then refunded me (not necessary, but I appreciated the kindness).

This place is incredible. The staff are incredibly sweet and knowledgeable. The book and merch collection is always so exciting to go through. My favorite part though is that they are huge members of the community. They stand by what they preach and host/are involved in events for women, people of color, and the LGBTQ+ community.

Such a great selection for all kinds of women. A terrific place to find supportive books, fun t-shirts, a little bit of everything. A great local business to support! Bring your daughters & have intriguing conversations over the cool stuff you find.

A unique store with a large selection of books, centering on female authors. They had a lot of books here that I have never seen stocked at other stores, so I of course had to buy them. They also have a good selection of gifts such as notebooks, shirts, puzzles, and jewelry.

They have such a variety of empowering books chapter books, autobiographies, self-help, graphic novels you name it book woman’s got it love this place get all your lgbtq+ friendly books here! Plus they have a bunch of fun gifts here too

I knew I’d fall in love with this store just by the window art. I felt welcomed and at home. Very friendly and helpful. There was such a wide variety of beautiful books, art, and gifts. Every black childrens book on my internet wishlist was in store! My son sat and read books in the children’s section for 30 minutes, he was so cozy. I can’t wait to go back.

Visited 7-17-21 and was greeted warmly. We were allowed to peruse in peace. Salesperson was knowledgeable and friendly. Titles and categories addressing so many diverse needs and issues. A true Austin treasure. Parking can be tight. Convenient location. Pleasing aroma in the store.

Black Pearl was on my wife’s “Must Visit” list in Austin and it honestly should be on yours too. This place was so cool. The space was laid out beautifully and had a very cozy feeling. They had banned books, kids books, and even free books. I highly suggest you pull up and let my guy give you a tour of the place. My wife and I will definitely be back.

Visiting Black Pearl Books was such an incredible experience. From the moment we walked in, we felt welcomed by Katrina and Eric, the amazing owners, and Micah, who was so helpful and kind. Their warmth and passion for books and community truly shine through every part of the store.

The book selection is outstanding. Each title feels thoughtfully chosen to highlight diverse voices and powerful stories that deserve to be read and shared. It is the kind of bookstore where you discover books you did not even know you needed.

Beyond the books, they also carry beautiful art, fun coffee table books, unique cards, totes, bookmarks, and so many more giftable items. You can easily spend hours browsing and still want to come back for more.

The is bookstore is a true Austin gem. They have a plethora of books and other cool items such as puzzles, bookmarks, jewelry, totes, funny stickers, and other fun but personable gifts and things.

The venue has a small event space you can reserve. It honestly felt like home because it was so vibey!

I realized recently how infrequently I go to bookstores. There’s something to be said about being around people who love books and these folks do. Micah showed me around and was super friendly. Got two new books and love them. Good bookstore for people who love books!

Really cute bookstore with a great selection. The owners were attentive and gave me a tour of this very quaint bookstore which my friend gave me a gift card too. Back Pearl is the best! I love coming here so much – whether I’m by myself or with my kids, they always make me feel at home. I can’t even tell you how many great books I’ve bought here, but I also love shopping for records, earrings, and puzzles. The store is warm, welcoming and well-stocked – go give them a visit!

Really enjoyed my visit to Austin Recycled Reads! We left with a box of books and couldn’t be happier. Great selection of various genres, outstanding prices and friendly customer service! I also saw they offer passport services. Looking forward to my next visit!

This is the Austin city library system’s outlet to sell off used books. In addition to fiction and nonfiction books, they have graphic novels, movies, posters, postcards, and bookmarks. It’s a great place to browse and a unique element of literacy in the local community.
According to an online article, “Recycled Reads was created in 2009 as a part of a way to abide by the city of Austin’s call for zero-waste, according to Paola Ferate-Soto, who has worked at the store since 2021.”

Got a nice little haul of books, but separate them yourself by cost when you take them to the register. I thought they would have a way of doing that themselves, but I was charged a few dollars more for my books. Otherwise a nice little store to check out if you’re in the area!

You can’t beat the prices of the Recycled Reads Bookstore with any other thrift store in Austin! The entire store ranges from $0.25 to $2, including movies and board games! The store is setup and looks just like a library, and you’ll find many old library books with their old barcodes in the shop. Some of the selection is older but it is fun to browse, and you never know what treasure you may find. The best part is that the inventory is always changing, so it’s a great place to revisit!

Awesome selection. This place is a real hidden gem. The employees here were awesome. I hope they get to keep the lease renewed. We were here for a few minutes and made a few friends. Also this place helps the library get rid of old books so the libraries are able to keep more recent and popular books.

Plenty of books. I bought four classics because those were easy to find through the huge variety. It is easy to get carried away buying when you see a title or author you recognize. If you come, have a list of authors you are interested in reading to make book hunting easier

Love the concept and all the community resources available in English and Spanish. Makes reading accessible. All library systems need to replicate this model! Check out tools. Check out garden seeds and “return” them at the end of the season. Language practice, knitting trouble shooting, passport services,, and so much more. I could stay for hours browsing and buying!
