Dr. Spellman is a great vet! He was very kind to my dog and very knowledgeable, he instantly was able to see what was going on with him. The office is very clean , and immediately after my dog came off the table they sanitized it for the next animals. The prices are really good, way better than what other offices charge, and the quality of service was excellent. I highly recommend taking your dog here and I will be definitely coming back for my dog’s annual checkup.

During covid I had to bring my elderly bearded dragon in to be euthanized. I really appreciated the empathy and kindness we were shown in an already terrible and trying time. We received her back in a beautiful wood carved box and a “claw” print plaque.
Since then I have brought our dog and more recently my daughter’s cat who has had urinary issues off and on. Dr. walker and Dr. Hogan have both seen him and are always thorough and knowledgeable about his condition. They also understand the financial burden can be tough and always offer the best treatment plans within my budget.
The vet techs are friendly and always make sure all my questions are answered.
The office is always clean and well stocked with the special food our cat needs.
All around great experience. 10/10⭐

Dr. Rae Hogan and their staff were spectacular at my chinchillas first vet visit due to dental issues. I was quite worried and scared, as most pet parents are, but their friendly staff made those worries disappear. They were so gentle handling my chinchilla. We loved Dr. Hogan’s bed side manner, they were very attuned to my chinchillas physical cues, and gave us the information we needed. He’ll be going back for dental surgery but I’m sure (and hoping) it’ll go smoothly.

Omg, what a great find. I’m from out of town and had to get my dog checked given blood in stool. I wish my vet was 1/2 as great as this office. Thank you so much!

I was very pleased with Honnas vet clinic. Dr. & Staff were great & professional. Loved the set up with separate rooms. You are allowed to sit in room with your pet while Dr. & Staff come in & perform most of the procedures in front of you.I was able to take my cat Charlie out of the carrier & let him sit with me. This method takes so much stress off the animal.

We love Dr Stein’s professionalism and kindness, very hard complement to find in a health professional now days.
The way Dr Stein gets involved with his patients makes you feel confident and respected in every single way.
Dr Stein’s explanation is so clear and easy to understand. He doesn’t put pressure on you to decide to do things on his way instead he gives you all the options out there and you can decide which one u want and which one is the best for your beloved pet. A pet is not just a pet like for same people, sometimes that pet is everything you have to hold on. He is the best oncologist.
He has the best team, very professional and kind.
I will say after we have visited so many Veterinarians AVES has the best team in the whole Austin area.

As a veterinarian myself I can attest to the wonderful care my little dog received over the holiday weekend at AVES. The ER staff and specialists worked together as a team to get him the emergency surgery he needed, ensure his anesthesia went smoothly, and make sure his pain and anemia were well managed. All while he was an uncooperative patient! Could not ask for more caring and highly skilled people. They constantly deal with people who are stressed and anxious about their pets. I know it’s an incredibly hard job and I’m so glad they are there. Thanks everyone!

We have been going to AVES for about 5-6 years. We see Dr. Sutton exclusively for my dog’s seizure disorder. We love coming to see Dr. Sutton and her team. They are truly the best! They are so responsive with emails. Communication is 100%! Every year we come for our check-ups, they always remember my grumpy little man and have had him very well-controlled. They are very knowledgeable, kind and compassionate to us and everyone we have referred to them. It is worth the drive across Austin! After being told by Mission Pet hospital in 2022 in San Antonio that it would be 4 or 5 months to get an appt w/ their oncologist (my dog would be dead by then), i went to AVES. Dr Stein saved my Onyx. He was honest, genuine and I am forever grateful. Unfortunately Onyx has developed diabetes and although my vet is fantastic, this case required a specialist. Enter Dr Schultz and his awesome tech Meredith. They spent over an hour with us explaining everything from A to Z. We have a plan and so far so good! It takes me about 1 1/2 hrs to get there but for specialists and care like this, its well worth it. They are also incredibly fair in their pricing. I expected to pay 3 times what i did. Also, i was so lost trying to get there and Raven at the desk was kind and friendly and helped me make it there in time. Thanks to everyone at AVES!! You guys are amazing!

My sweet puppy went in going septic in his stomach due to an internal stitch coming undone from a previous surgery at a different facility and they gave him a 40% chance at making it. Our primary vet referred us to AVES and they gave him a 50% chance of making it. Dr. Jeremy Fleming was amazing he preformed the surgery needed to give my puppy the best shot. My sweet boy got to come home after spending 4 days at this facility. The level of care he received was amazing. From the front desk staff to his team of Doctors, nurses and techs he was truly cared for and loved on. We live over an hour away and the staff was so kind they allowed us to FaceTime him. I can’t say enough good things about this place. Forever thankful we got our boy back

I was very impressed with this clinic and I would 1000% return. Dr Sutton is insanely intelligent, very personable and you can tell she cares alot of about animals. I knew I could trust her when first meeting her.

I don’t write long reviews, but I am making an exception for this one. Starting from the beginning:

I first reached out via email. I gave them my story with a list of questions. They responded back letting me know they received my email and that the neurology team was out until Tuesday and they would get back to me then. I really appreciated just the acknowledgement.

Tuesday rolls around and I got a reply back to each and every one of my questions, which doesnt always happen. I didn’t have to follow up because they followed through. This solidified my decision.

I have a unique situation because of my schedule, and I made it clear the time was limited and they worked with me to come up with a plan. They called me to schedule, and we hammered out the details and made sure they understood my timeline.

My little girl, Lunabelle is a 7 year old Pug with weakness in her hind legs. We knew she had something going on with her spine, but she needed an MRI first. Dr Sutton was on the same page- we wont attempt surgery if the chance of her being worse or even surviving out weighs the benefits. During her MRI, Dr Sutton called and explained what she was seeing and sent me images so I could understand and we decided we could move forward with surgery. We knew going into it that she wouldn’t be “cured” but the end goal was to help alleviate some of her issues, and prolong her life. We are hopeful thats exactly what will happen. Its too soon to know what her mobility will be long term, but its already looking promising.

Lunabelle was kept overnight for observation and we went to see her the next day. She was already recovering well and Dr. Sutton agreed we could take her home. They went over post op instructions and made sure we understood everything.

Dr. Sutton did a phenomenal job, and the incision looked amazing. Her recovery is going well and I would 100% do it again! Every team member we encountered was friendly, follow up was great, clinic is nice and clean. Communication was excellent. I could go on and on. Thank you AVES for a great experience, we will forever be grateful!!

My best friend Princess (11 yr old Chiweenie) started having a cough then one morning could barely breathe. I brought her here and they immediately took care of her and made her as comfortable as possible. She was in an oxygen tank but they let me sit with her the whole time. Unfortunately Princess had heart failure and her lungs were filled with fluid, I had to let my best friend go that day. Probably the hardest day of my life. They moved us in a room together with an oxygen hose for her so I could spend as much time as I needed and let me hold her when it was time to say Goodnight. There was no rushing me. They helped with all the decisions I didn’t want to make about Urns and such. I finally brought her home today and when I picked her up the staff was so incredible with taking care of her and handling everything. They went above and beyond to take care of me and my girl. I hope I never have to bring another pet to an ER but if I do there is only one place I will ever go. Thank you guys for everything.

We had to take our dog Ollie in late on Thursday 8/14 due to him being super lethargic and feeling a large hard lump in his abdomen. He ended up needing an emergency splenectomy. From the time we walked in, until the time we left (at 4am) the staff at VEG was absolutely beyond incredible. We were able to sit with him the entire time, they explained all the options that we had, helped us with financing, let us bring his toy for him, and even let me nervously pace all night during his surgery until he got out of it. The biggest sign of how amazing they are is that he never got nervous or the anxious shakes at all. The facility is immaculate and large and open, which I feel works wonders on nervous dogs. Every single person that worked there was so knowledgeable, helpful and generous, and we were able to pick him up early the next day and were given everything he would need for his recovery. I cannot recommend them enough. They saved my boy and helped me through a tough night. Thank you for everything!

I took my cat Percy to VEG S. Lamar last night because he was experiencing vomiting and excessive diarrhea. They saw him quickly and treated him with so much care and attentiveness. The team provided medication, special diet cans, and fluids, making sure he was comfortable throughout the process. By the next morning, his face was already starting to look normal again and his energy level was beginning to recover. I’m so glad they knew exactly how to treat him and got it right on point for Percy. I’m very grateful for their compassionate care!

I brought my dog, Monet, here for an emergency visit and left feeling heartbroken and frustrated. She was coughing up foam and blood, breathing heavily, and clearly in distress. The vet only treated her with antibiotics and kept her overnight without doing further diagnostics or addressing the root cause of her rapid decline. By morning, I was told via text that there “wasn’t much improvement” — but in reality, she had declined significantly.

I did appreciate that they provided mobile oxygen so I could safely transport her to another vet. However, I did not appreciate being told I should start considering her “quality of life” instead of pushing for more answers. When I rushed her to Violet Crown, they immediately discovered a large amount of fluid in her lungs, drained it right away, and she finally had relief. To know she was suffering all night while nothing was done and no one reached out to update me is absolutely heartbreaking.

If your pet is in critical condition, please go elsewhere. Emergency care should mean acting quickly and aggressively to save lives, not waiting while they suffer.

I want to thank the hospital that took care of my sweet senior girl last night. I can’t remember names because I was too traumatized by everything happening, but every single person I spoke to was kind, patient, and understanding from the moment I called until the moment I left.

They acted so quickly! I called with my ETA and a very strong, compassionate lady carried my girl inside to get her help right away. Sadly, the outcome wasn’t what we hoped for. Kayce was an older Labrador with health issues, and it was her time to cross the rainbow bridge. I arrived with her by my side, and left with only some of her fur clippings and the hope of seeing her again one day.

From the receptionist, to the vet techs, to the veterinarians, every single one of them cared for her and for my family with so much love. We were given privacy, time, and space to say our goodbyes, and nothing felt rushed. My girl went peacefully, surrounded by care and compassion.

I’m not an expert in ER vet visits (thankfully), but this was one of the most caring hospitals I’ve ever experienced. I truly felt they cared for both pets and people. I’ll always be grateful for the love they showed us on one of the hardest nights of my life.

With an aching heart, I share a smile from the sweetest girl. Kayce says thanks

We arrived at 7 a.m., and our little Brandy (a Chiweenie) was seen immediately. She was treated with exceptional care, and the positive energy from everyone helped soothe her, as well as my husband and me. The doctor, along with the assistants and staff, was incredible. Brandy was given three medications to ease her pain and antibiotics. They also provided us with a bag of goodies to help with her care.

After a painful and stressful pre-24-hour situation, Brandy transitioned into a much more relaxed state.

Thank you all for your professionalism, empathy, and care for Brandy.

This is truly a well-rounded veterinary emergency room! I highly recommend it!

I had an unexpected visit to VEG last Thursday. My old lady Callie had us up all night for vomiting. Very unlike her. I know with her getting older more issues can arise. I’m glad I made the decision to come in to your facility because she needed the love you all gave her. Callie can be a little sassy in her older age and everyone took there time with her and moved at her pace. Morgan welcomed us as we walked through the door, Dr. Sheahan had her hands full with a busy ER. Callie was seen right away to make sure we were stable and find the cause of what’s going on. Courtney was fantastic and made the process of placing a catheter and collecting blood so smooth. Callie did have to be hospitalized for part of the day to receive fluids and pain medication. I know when I leave Callie in a kennel she can start to sing the blues and be a bit disruptive… Dahee and Nora assured me that even if she starts to sing she wouldn’t be a problem. When I came to pick her up she was in her own playpen area with a nurse giving her cuddles, I believe the nurse was Jada. With the circumstances of my visit with what was going on I will return to VEG 100000x over. Thank y’all for being here and providing top notch care for Miss Callie J.

Dr. Kautz and his staff are wonderful. We just started with Crestview after some negative experiences at other vets. He was thorough and gave us plenty of his time and expertise, explaining some of the procedures our four dachshunds will be having. Also, I didn’t feel like we were being overcharged like it felt at other vets. Finally, Crestview has their own pharmacy and we were able to save 65% off the meds we were getting from chewy.com.

This is an amazing clinic. The staff is very accommodating with appointments and flexibility. The clinic is charming and clean.

The part that I appreciate most is how my cats and I are treated — mostly my 2 cats. I can tell the vet techs and Dr. Carmona actually love kitties. Dr. Carmona has a thorough way of explaining pertinent information and draws on quite a bit of experience and anecdotal advice.

I love coming to this clinic because Dr. Carmona and all the vet techs I’ve met have a great sense of humor — which helps when it’s tense bringing your cat to the vet. One of the things I truly appreciate about Dr. Carmona is his ability to truly listen. He is also flexible when ideas are discussed. I can tell he truly loves what he does.

Very nice people…They gave my puppy a well-child checkup, made sure her spay surgery was healing up OK, and updated her shots. I felt like my baby was in very good hands.

I have tried many vets in Austin and this one takes the cake. My little dachshund had IVDD and had to get surgery. They got him in as soon as possible and the vet herself was calling around different hospitals to get us quotes. Without her dedication to my dog, he would not be able to walk. I cannot recommend Crestview enough. And they are upfront and affordable. They actually care about your animals!!!

Dr Barnes and her team are absolutely amazing and I am so thankful for them. They were able to see my girl the NEXT DAY and were so kind to her and explained to me all the steps and treatment needed. All the medicine was well labeled and explained as well. I already knew I would be following the instructions and medications as recommended. I’d only say the area of improvement could be explaining the cost a bit more – but the cost was more than reasonable and fair. I am so thankful for them – truly. Yes, they can be a bit busy but it’s also an emergency facility and they balanced the emergencies that came in while I was there in grace. We were referred for ophthalmology not emergency- but they are great at balancing both departments. Once again – so thankful and really wonderful team from techs to doctor.

While I obviously wasn’t happy that my cat was in such bad shape that she needed to go here, they made it a really good experience. She was in critical condition so they took her in almost immediately and began treatment. My vet didn’t think she’d make it but these doctors didn’t seem to have an issue getting to the root cause and nursing her back to near full health. I’d say the only negative is the price but it’s to be expected with 24/7 care.

Today I had to say goodbye to my beloved pup, Sambo. He was originally my mom’s dog and became mine, and we were lucky to share over 13 wonderful years together. Sambo had been facing several health challenges, and I chose humane euthanasia so he wouldn’t suffer.

The staff at Central Texas Veterinary were incredible—every person, from the receptionist to the nurse and the doctor, showed such kindness and compassion. In the midst of my heartbreak, their care made an unbearable moment a little more peaceful, and I’m deeply grateful for that.

I took my poor kitty here at 1:30 AM. That night, I unexpectedly had to send him across the rainbow bridge. I’ve never done that before and it breaks my heart being without him. This vet office took excellent care of him and were all so kind to us in the process. I am grateful to have had these caring folks to guide us through the process. I even received a handwritten note in the mail offering their condolences. Thank you Dr. Miller and all staff that was there that night ♥️

Central Texas Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Hospital South Austin gave our dog truly exceptional care after he suffered a tibia-fibula fracture that required surgery. Dr. Krista Adamovich, DVM, performed the procedure and took the time to walk us through every detail with clarity and compassion. Her surgical expertise and thorough explanation gave us complete confidence that our pup was in the very best hands.

Carolyn at the front desk was so kind and helpful, keeping us well-informed and supported every step of the way. After surgery, Bri provided thoughtful and detailed post-op teaching that helped us feel well-prepared to care for him at home. The entire team was incredibly kind, communicative, and professional from start to finish.

We are so grateful for their outstanding care and wholeheartedly recommend them to anyone needing emergency or specialty veterinary services. They are simply the best!

When we first arrived, they happily signed us in if you’re willing to front $1000. Once you’ve fronted the money, they take your animal away to be “put in an oxygen box”, a very pricy and frequently unnecessary step. Then they put you into a virtual holding cell for 3.5 hours until they get around to dealing with your animal. Even after that time, they took a failed xray that didn’t show the actual damage that was done and recommended we leave him overnight so they could fully sedate him and take better x-rays. Their prices start inflated and having him stay overnight so they can “watch” him would of course inflate the price drastically. Afterwards, when they were explaining the course of drugs, the vet was extremely aggressive, rude, and condescending.
According to prior reviewers, this place has gone downhill from what it used to be.
I don’t know how this place is still in business.
There’s a place across the street that’s rated significantly higher. That’s where I’ll be going in the future when I have a vet emergency.

I brought my 17+ year old cat to Brodie Animal Hospital… and they were very fair with me. They did not try to give me all sorts of blood work & unnecessary charges, but just one injection (total visit was less than $175). They said to keep an eye on her & see if she improves by the end of the week. They were VERY KIND, COMPASSIONATE, AND FRIENDLY!!! I certainly recommend them!!!!!

The entire staff, from the front desk to the technicians to the doctors, are all amazing. The vet assistant and the veterinarian and surgical assistant were all very patient and understanding with my very reactive dog. The staff was expecting her and we were seen as quickly as the doctor arrived. My dog was able to get her teeth cleaned and have some X-rays done during the visit. The staff was straightforward about costs, recommendations and they collaborated well with my dog’s mobile vet. The next day, I received a follow up call. I highly recommend this practice.

Incredible experience bringing my cat! They got me in right away. Had a special sensory room for cats!! It had special music and a calming plug in! They gave us a little swag bag with a treat and a toy for being new customers. The doctor took her time explaining things to me and called to follow up with more results the next day. Doctor is knowledgeable. Office staff are so friendly. Vibes are great all around!!! And it was soooo affordable!!! They showed me a break down price estimate of everything before starting any exam and it ended up being considerably cheaper! I’d recommend this clinic to anyone and everyone!

We have been going to Star of Texas Vet for almost two years, ever since we adopted our boxer-pitbull, Fish, and honestly I can’t imagine going anywhere else! Fish had some bad experiences with vets when we first got him, so I was so glad when we found out that SoT was fear-free certified, because I knew he would require extra care and understanding regarding his anxiety and fear of vets. Everyone at SoT goes above and beyond to accommodate Fish’s needs: making sure the lobby is clear and calm when we arrive, having lots of treats to reward him, being extra patient and taking their time to allow Fish to get acclimated. There aren’t enough compliments to give Fish’s doctor – Dr. Alexander! She really goes the extra mile to figure out how to make Fish’s exams the calmest possible – whether it’s going super slow to help him ease into things, or sometimes when it’s absolutely necessary (like for shots and vaccines) she allows me to accompany him to the back, and we all figure a way to make the process as painless as possible. She’s constantly monitoring whether Fish is over threshold, and is always ok to take a break if she feels like he’s too stressed. The amount of attention and care paid to him brings me so much joy, and gives me confidence that my boy is well taken care of.
We can’t say enough good things about Star of Texas! The fact that we live in north Austin and continue to make the 30min drive each way is testament to how much we appreciate everyone there. Thank you for being such amazing animal caregivers!

I’m so glad we found Star of Texas. I adopted a rescue bulldog who has had so many challenging medical issues from years of neglect. Having a fear free vet is very important to me, because the world can be a scary and untrusting place for him after all he’s been through. The staff was so welcoming and even got my boy a towel when we came in the door since it was storming. He loved that there was a couch in his exam room where he could sit by me haha and lots of treats. Dr Honeycutt was amazing! She and her techs were so friendly and gentle and listened to my concerns. They didn’t force any meds, vaccines or tests that weren’t needed. Dr Honeycutt even offered holistic options since my dog is extremely sensitive and has neurological issues. I got a call the very next day with bloodwork results and imaging findings. I also really love that when I called we didn’t have to wait weeks to be seen. I’m so grateful to have found such a compassionate and caring vet and team for my sweet boy! We’re excited to also get some help with nutrition counseling which they offer as well. I’ve been to many vets in Austin over the years, and I highly recommend this one!

Dr. Alexander and her staff are so incredibly kind, knowledgeable, and thorough. We appreciate that so much and felt totally heard during our appointment. Our pup is going through a lot of health issues right now and I know he’s a complicated case but they approached the situation with so much empathy and care. That is not something we have experienced at all vet offices so we were so happy. I know everyone is busy and probably stressed but Dr. Alexander and her staff didn’t let that get in the way of showing up with smiles and understanding. We loved our visit!

Parker Animal Care is the absolute best! This is the only place I’d trust with my 2 dogs and 3 cats. The front desk staff, Sergio, and Amy are the sweetest and have such great energy. Dr. Parker and Dr. Pocernich are both so knowledgeable and kindly answer all my questions. Vet techs Vanessa, Ty and Janice are equally knowledgeable and so caring with my pets. I have a 15yr old dog who has been seeing Dr. Parker and her team since she was puppy. Their phenomenal care and expertise is a major contributor to my little senior pup’s health and longevity. I also love the special touches like seasonal photo backdrops in the waiting room and visits with Santa! I just can’t recommend this place enough!

Frequently Asked Questions about Veterinarians in Austin

What types of animals do veterinarians in Austin typically treat?

Veterinarians in Austin generally treat a wide range of animals. While most are experienced with dogs and cats, many also provide care for exotic pets such as birds, reptiles, and small mammals like rabbits and guinea pigs. Some practices specialize in large animal care, including horses and livestock, although these are less common within the city limits. Be sure to check with a veterinarian’s office to confirm if they handle your specific type of pet.

How can I find a reputable veterinarian in Austin?

Finding a reputable veterinarian involves several steps. Start by asking for recommendations from friends, family, or local pet groomers. Online reviews and ratings can also be helpful, but consider them alongside other information. Look for a veterinarian who is certified by the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), as this indicates a commitment to high standards of care. Checking their online presence and credentials is also advised.

What are the costs associated with veterinary care?

The costs of veterinary care vary significantly depending on the type of service required. Routine check-ups are generally less expensive than emergency procedures or surgeries. Costs depend on factors like the animal's size and age, the complexity of the diagnosis, and the medications needed. It’s recommended to ask for an estimate before any procedures are performed.

What is an AAHA-accredited veterinary practice?

AAHA accreditation signifies a high level of quality in veterinary care. The American Animal Hospital Association sets strict standards for facility equipment, record-keeping, staff training, and overall practice management. AAHA-accredited hospitals undergo regular inspections to ensure they maintain these standards. Choosing an accredited practice can provide assurance of a certain level of care.

What should I expect during a routine check-up?

During a routine check-up, the veterinarian will typically perform a physical examination, checking your pet's vital signs, eyes, ears, teeth, heart, and lungs. They may also discuss your pet’s diet, exercise habits, and any behavioral concerns. Depending on the pet’s age and health history, they might recommend vaccinations or preventative medications.

What does "emergency veterinary care" involve?

Emergency veterinary care is required for animals experiencing life-threatening conditions, such as severe injuries, poisoning, difficulty breathing, or seizures. Emergency clinics are typically staffed 24/7 and equipped to handle a wider range of urgent situations. Prompt attention is crucial in these circumstances to improve the animal’s chances of survival.

Are there specialized veterinarians in Austin?

Yes, Austin has veterinarians who specialize in various areas, such as dermatology, cardiology, oncology, and surgery. These specialists have completed advanced training and are equipped to handle more complex cases. Referrals from a general practice veterinarian are typically required to see a specialist.

What vaccinations are typically recommended for pets in Austin?

The vaccinations recommended for pets in Austin depend on several factors, including the animal’s age, lifestyle, and local disease prevalence. Common core vaccines for dogs include rabies, distemper, parvovirus, and adenovirus. Cats typically receive rabies, feline distemper (FVRCP), and feline leukemia. Discussing your pet’s individual needs with a veterinarian is essential.

Can I get pet insurance through a veterinarian’s office?

While most veterinarians' offices do not directly sell pet insurance, they are often familiar with various insurance providers and can offer advice about selecting a suitable policy. Many offices will also work with you to submit insurance claims. It's important to research different insurance plans and compare coverage options independently.

What happens if I need to board my pet?

Many veterinarians' offices offer boarding services, providing a familiar and comfortable environment for pets while their owners are away. Alternatively, there are dedicated pet boarding facilities in Austin. Be sure to check the boarding facility’s cleanliness, staff training, and safety protocols before leaving your pet in their care. Updated vaccinations are often required for boarding.
