Zookeeper Exotics appears to be a valued resource for reptile enthusiasts in Central Texas. They offer a crucial service, acting as one of the few dedicated reptile shops in the area. The store seems to provide a selection of reptiles, alongside associated food and supplies, catering to a specific niche audience seeking exotic pets.

While a dedicated space for reptile care and purchase is beneficial, it is vital to prioritize the animal’s health and welfare. Thorough investigation into the origins and conditions of any reptile before acquisition is strongly recommended for prospective owners. Transparency and clear information regarding animal care are essential for a responsible establishment like this.

I rarely ever leave bad reviews but this needed to be shared. I got my Ball Python here as a hatchling even a couple months old. She was an amazing snake and my first but recently passed from IBD and just tore me apart when I had to put her down. She was almost two years old. It broke my heart the conditions were not the best but also not the worst however I didn’t get much info on my ball python just she was a female and she had just came in with a few of her siblings. Either mom or dad had it or she was housed in an infected or not so sterile environment, this condition is not curable and the virus is highly contagious to other reptiles that are mainly boas and BPs. Really sad that she was sick and I had to find out the hard way. I got really attached to her since she was so young and sweet, she was gorgeous. I miss her terribly. Please do your research before just getting a snake or any pet or animal. Do better zookeeper exotics please. pic of when I got her and the second one is the day I had to put her down.

Zookeeper is the best, and one of the only reptile pet shops in Central Texas. I’ve been coming here for decades at different locations and they are the best place to go for any sort of reptile, amphibian, spider, or arachnid needs. They also have birds, and sometimes other more exotic mammals. They have an extensive supply of feeder, insects and rodents, both living and frozen. And they have a large selection of terrarium plants, including orchids.

I got a tarantula here and they helped me put the entire enclosure together. I also come here to get Dubai crickets, mealworms, and other items for my bearded dragon. Every time I come in, they are extremely kind and helpful and I love coming here for my reptile needs. You definitely should check this place out if you haven’t been!

Stopped in with some friends today! You can tell the animals are well taken care of. The staff genuinely know what they’re doing and it reflects in the animals. They’re healthy weights with enough space and NO reptile grass, not to mention having a heat lamp on one side and a shaded area on the other. Indicative of real knowledge from staff. 🙂

I’ve been buying dubia roaches for my gecko from this store for a while. There were always some beetles mixed in, which wasn’t ideal since my gecko doesn’t eat them, but they were slow and easy enough to pick out.

However, during my last purchase, I unknowingly brought home a young American roach(or maybe it’s a Red runner I am not sure) hidden among the dubias. I only realized it this week, 2-3 months later, because it had grown so large it could no longer hide. Unlike beetles, it runs extremely fast, and it was very stressful for me to deal with. I specifically buy dubia because they don’t infest homes like regular roaches, so this was the exact problem I was trying to avoid. I still don’t know how to handle this one, can I return it to the store? So crazy.

The beetles and now a regular cockroach mixed in with the feeders is too much. I gave 2 stars because every employee I’ve met here has been kind and helpful, but I believe there are hygiene and quality control issues with how the feeders are handled. Because of this, I am sad that I won’t be purchasing feeders from this store again.

Staff is always pleasant, store is always clean. I sometimes take my young cat with me. And he never knows how to act in public, but being a typical curious cat, he likes to explore and climb stuff in the store…under my supervision of course. And I never felt like he was being a nuisance to the staff. The staff pets him and they greet me… Encouraging me that it’s okay because he’s just being a cat. The cats that they have up for adoption always so cute, I see how well tended to they are, always cared for and talked to and played with by the staff. I don’t really have anything negative to say about this PetSmart location. A five-star review from me for sure.

Took my very well behaved Saint Bernard to this location for his grooming back in April. The person who groomed him was not the nicest, and told me how terrible my dog was at pick up. My dog has never had any issues getting groomed before, and is a very well behaved psychiatric service animal. I’m not sure if this groomer was having a bad day or what, but sadly I’ll never return there again. Dogs can sense when you aren’t kind, so please be kind and gentle with dogs or find another job I took my dog to a different Petsmart location grooming today, and they told me how sweet and kind he was and that they were “surprised” about the negative notes left by the previous groomer at this location because he was so well behaved and sweet! Some empathy and kindness goes a long way when working with animals and humans.

What a hack job! (See pics attached SMH) I just picked up my two small dogs from the grooming department at PetsMart on Research Blvd. Disappointed is the nicest way I can relay my sentiment, especially after I explained and even showed them pictures of their previous haircuts (as I do when we have to try a new agent).

Sadly, the hair is cut very unevenly all over. I don’t know how this is even possible, as they were supposed to be using clippers with the selected length’s guard on it. Some areas around the mid-section and behind the legs were chopped up unevenly with what I can imagine were scissors. This does not look professional at all. Look at the attached pics.

I specifically asked them to NOT cut the hairs from around the smallest dog’s ears and they did it anyway. Looks like a different dog (not in a good way). I asked them to give both dogs a teddy bear face, like they always have. Instead, one’s face is totally elongated (like a fox) and the other has the chin hair cut so short it looks like there is no bottom jaw.

The worse part of it all is that I paid $179.70 for the disappointment. On the bright side, in a few weeks, their hair will have grown back enough that I can take them to a different grooming service.

In short, If you just want random long hairs cut short, in any manner possible, this is your spot. But, if you care about what your pet looks like and you want to get what you asked for and paid for, DO NOT take your dog to this Petsmart location for grooming.

I requested 2 vaccinations for this year’s annual check up. I did not get any vaccination the first $75 appointment instead charged an extra $25 for anxiety medication. The second check up they could only do one vaccination and suggested I do a more stronger medication so my pet does not walk and only breath which was an extra at least $100 plus another visit, with no guarantee that they will complete the next vaccination. I have went to Banfield for my pet before and it did not take more than two visits to get my 2 vaccination request completed.

Monica shamed me for being on time to my appointment because the booking person for some strange reason booked me for two appointments for my two dogs one for 10:30 then one for 11. I only approved of the 11:00 so I was really confused. Not only did she shame me but she took it out on my pup. I guess she choose to hate me specifically that and I never even met this woman before.
Instead of taking my business elsewhere after being blatantly disrespected by her I made the mistake of allowing her to go forth with the appointment as my pup needed the grooming.
When I picked up my babe she had completely shaved him down to the skin.. she was supposed to only go as far as the third level of shortness depicted on the fur length chart as discussed. Obviously she knew she screwed up because she didn’t even deliver my pup to me upon arrival instead had someone else drop him off to me while Monica hid herself from me. My dog was shaved down to a pulp.. exposing skin and red raw paw pads, crusted poop still dried on his butt hole and his tail is basically non existent (he is a 2 year old Shih Tzu and has zero protection on his tiny body now.
Also this woman tried to increase the amount that I was quoted on the phone as well. I never received an apology from this spineless female groomer who for some reason choose to hate both me and my dog that day. Now my pup is incessantly licking his raw paws and it’s apparent that he is hurting.
Consistency is non existent with Monica as I have seen a review that she received where the customer was happy with her work and that is very concerning to me. It definitely felt personal.
I was more than polite to this woman although she was absolutely disrespectful to me.
To me, this is animal abuse. I don’t ever leave bad reviews, if I leave a review it’s only to express my praise towards a service or place. So this was pretty bad and it left me feeling pretty horrible all day afterwards.

I’ve been going here for about 20 years. Always helpful and friendly. If you want to talk about dog food or about any animal as nauseam, this is your place! It’s always clean and the animals are clearly happy. Even Leroy has been there for 30 some odd years and to see a bird in pristine condition that hasn’t pulled its feathers tells you they take good care of their own.

My favorite pet store in the Austin area. My husband and I used to live nearby and we would love coming to see all the animals. Adopted a winter white dwarf hamster a week ago. Very happy, healthy little guy. Vet on staff offered some help and explained that he came from a local breeder and was living with his littermates at the time. Lovely experience, very happy w the new addition to our fur family!

I’ve been a customer for 10 years at pet supplies. I bought food and contained it in a large screw top container a month later I was mixing it with other food. I took it back to store with receipt they wouldn’t return it because I didn’t have original bag? Who keeps the dog food bag for a month? There were bugs in it and I dumped to bags of food out and returned the rest to store but, the supposed manager said if you don’t have the original bag we can’t return even with receipt. Their website and acct management is so bad it’s not worth it and I was told how bad the website is by an employee. I got a 15% discount on my email yesterday and said use by April 25 2025 really. There many better places and they lost a very good customer

Called in to see if y’all had my 14-year old whippet’s Pro Plan variety in stock. First off, Allison is sooooooooooo nice and helpful. She’s the star of this review. So, Ozzie and I went in (we live very close) and although y’all didn’t have the exact one, Allison helped me find one that worked. Fact is, Ozzie likes this formula more, so we’re switching! Also, I’ll be switching to this place instead of CHEWY.
THEN Allison preceded to run around trying to help me find silver vine for my ‍⬛ and food for him as well, although she was super busy putting away stock.
This level of kindness and customer service is something that’s becoming more and more a scarcity, once a standard business practice when I moved here in the early 90s.
Thank you,

They also participate in local charity events along with admirable hiring practices.

The staff this location are incredibly knowledgeable and clearly passionate about what they do. Great for if your pet has specific needs or you just want some expert advice. My cat is a picky eater, she even rejects wet food. I thought it would be hard to find a nutritious dry meal but this is what we have landed on. Definitely recommend! Don’t forget to grab your pet some treats too, they have a variety of single ingredient goods.

Even though the cost is slightly high compared to large retailers they are always stocked up for my pet run, even for specialty products (special cat litter, cat pee enzyme removal cleaning solution, high quality cat food). I love that they give away special treats for both human and the pet. For July 4 I got a free catnip pouch for my cat and she went crazy for it (photos). Last year I got a very generous Dutch apple pie from the store for Christmas (or thanksgiving) and it was unforgettable—soooo yummy and not too sweet ‍ I appreciate the generosity and thoughtfulness, always makes me want to go back. The pets up for adoption are also nice to check out. Overall, a small store compared to your PetSmart/Petco but it’s surprisingly so well stocked, it has everything I need!

Wow! What a wonderful small business! I absolutely loved the energy when I first walked in — instantly greeted with a smile and willingness to assist! I used the dog wash service ($18.99) and it was great! There are four different soap options, with a very clean, private space for you and your pup! After that, we shopped around for some goodies (amazing variety) and when checking out, we were met with more smiles. Kai, our wonderful cashier, was extremely knowledgeable about everything and even gave us some freebies to try out!!! Will be returning in the future! 🙂 P.S. Need to come on a weekend for some pup froyo!

Thank you Kai I really appreciate your thoughtfulness and always positive attitude!

I only visited the south congress location a couple of times, and I have had a great experience every time. Every one has been super nice, informative on products, and even offered samples of kitty kibble for my fur babies to try. I signed up for their loyalty program. It is nice to have a pet store that cares, the owner even sent us a thank you card in the mail with a free froyo coin for my kitties.

It’s a good store. Kind of inconvenient getting into. Has decent stocking for dogs not as much for cats.
Edit: I will absolutely visit the other Paws stores. There really aren’t any negatives about this store. You will find what you need here.

Started coming to Hollywood Feed when I moved to Austin in 2023 because it was the closest place we could find that sold my dog’s favorite kibble, Pure Vita! The staff is always very welcoming and helpful. The free delivery is also extremely convenient on busy days where I don’t have time to run to the store. They also have an awesome rewards problem.

Petco generally offers a decent selection of products for various pets. The availability of grooming services> can be a significant convenience for many owners, particularly those with breeds requiring specialized care. They seem to have a range of food options catering to different dietary needs, a plus for animals with sensitivities.

While the overall product quality seems acceptable, improvements in customer interaction are needed. A more attentive and welcoming environment, especially from store associates, would greatly enhance the shopping experience. It would be beneficial to see consistently friendly and helpful staff offering assistance with pet supplies.

WORMS IN CAT FOOD!! This is my go to petco and I am absolutely disappointed that this was sold on the shelf. It’s my fault for not checking closer since it was on clearance, but holy crap. I wasn’t expecting to find worms when I opened the bag. I’ll update the review when I get my refund from the store but yikes beware!! I tossed the bag in the trash and I’m too scared to look for the expiration date, but this bag looks old and forgotten :/

Update: Went back to the store the next day to return the item. The store associate apologized and said that this rarely happens with Instinct brand cat food. She gave me a full refund and I bought a different cat food. She gave me 30% off my purchase of a new bag. I read online that bugs could happen due to improper storage, so maybe these bags got left somewhere for a really long time, which is why they were on clearance. I’ve previously bought Instinct high protein cat food before with no issues.

The past two visits have been awful and I won’t be returning to this or any Petco. The last time I was rudely interrupted by (I think) a manager during checkout and there was a long line with an open register. Today I was wandering the aisles looking for something and theee employees passed me. None of them greeted me or asked if they could help me find what I was looking for. I sincerely asked the cashier how they were doing and the response was “Do you have a phone number with us?” Nonexistent customer service in every interaction. I work retail, too. I know it’s a grind, but this is unacceptable.

Wow. What a bizarre and unnecessary experience I had at this Petco tonight. Nothing like innocently walking into a pet store in an excellent mood to pick up a few cans of food for your 5 pound Pomeranian to have it end with the store manager threatening to call the cops on you.
It started with me trying to purchase prescription dog food. I didn’t have my Petco prescription card with me that’s needed to purchase the food; however, I did have a Petsmart prescription card, but the store manager wouldn’t accept it. Understandable, right. Except then I realized that my vet is still open and I can call them to get the prescription, yay! Yeah, no. The store manager said no that won’t work because it doesn’t have a barcode and the only way to get a barcode is through the Petco onsite vet who is closed for the evening. What? I didn’t have to do that when I originally brought in the prescription to Petco. So confusing and frustrating because at this point I’ll even take one can of dog food so my dog doesn’t starve. I decide to call the Petco 800 number to see if someone can assist me because the store manager said she was the only person in charge at the store. The customer service person was actually very nice and tried to accommodate me. She said if my vet calls in my prescription to the store than that is acceptable, so I handed the phone to the store manager so customer service could tell her directly. At that point I also remembered that I actually have his physical prescription from the vet in my car! Yay again! I can get my dog some food! Yeah, no. Guess who put her foot down and said no that won’t work. You got it, you know, the big boss, store manager. I practically begged and pleaded with her to accept the prescription from the vet and at least sell me one can of food and she refused. Even though I now had the physical prescription right there in my hand, because it didn’t have the Petco prescription account number for her to scan, she said she absolutely will not be selling me any dog food and that I needed to leave the store or she will call the cops. Seriously? I wasn’t even mad. I was just trying to prove my case and show her that I was abiding by the rules and providing the necessary paperwork. She definitely thought she was doing the right thing by sticking to her stringent way of thinking, using zero logic skills. NOT smart. NOT management material. So, she calls the cops on me (weird) and I leave. I have the tiniest, sweetest, most adorable little dog who’s hungry and the store manager refuses to sell me one can of dog food even when I, the customer, provide a what is needed to purchase the food. Who does that? Only someone who obviously doesn’t care about animals and should never be in charge of a pet store.
If she’s not fired because of this incident, that’s fine because she will inevitably do something else to get herself fired. It’s just a matter of time. ✌️

Although I appreciate the friendly staff, there are a few concerns that warrant improvement at this pet store. While selecting a new fish, I observed several tanks containing deceased fish or fish being attacked by other fish that were not well-suited for cohabitation. While I will continue to patronize the store due to its convenient location near H-E-B, I hope that the overall quality of the store will be enhanced with increased effort.

The store is very clean and items are easy to find. The staff is friendly and quick to help. I asked an employee the difference between two similar items. She told me she didn’t know but would look it up. Gave me an answer in minutes. Great customer service! The baths in the back are great for large pups and affordable. I love that they provide all the bathing supplies.

Quick, easy, and the prices are FABULOUS! I was so shocked when I found this place on a whim today. The staff brought us straight back to our bathroom and it just got better from there. They gave you eeevvverryytthing you may possibly need to ensure your pooch is as clean as if they went to a pro groomer! I also didn’t have to get my entire outfit wet since they gave me aprons, towels, and a dryer with low-high settings. (Also: 3 different shampoos, conditioner, 2 scents to choose from fragrance sprays, teeth cleaning, ear cleaning, defur brushes, and flea spray!) This was my puppies first time going to a bathtub place and she did great. Oh! Also complimentary bowl of treats so that you can reward your pup while they get cleaned! I love love love this place will definitely be back next month for another bath 🙂

We stopped here to get some toys for our dog Archie . This was such a cute store . They have everything, food, toys , and collars, you name it . We (my dog & I, equally) LOVE this place!

They have great selection of everything and anything you could possibly need, and the owner is sooo incredibly kind and knowledgeable.

He always makes us feel welcome and has no issues sharing treats 🙂

I read some comments here about poor customer service, but honestly I think it’s because he’s not very “in your face” salesy or pushy, he’s very chill. He lets you do your thing in there & is more than happy to help if you have any questions. Which I appreciate.

His dog is also usually there, and is the only big dog that my reactive dog actually likes. His boxer is really calm & sweet – and I think his calm nature makes my dog less reactive.

One of our favorite Austin gems.

We visit every time we come from Houston. We first discovered this store when my wife’s previous family dog was aging and having trouble with play. Matt recommended the perfect toy, usually meant for pups, and it became Sadie’s favorite toy during her last year. Since then we’ve adopted a new pup, Ripley, and he has loved coming with us on our Austin trips and Matt’s store is must-stop for him. The selection of toys, treats, food, and accessories he manages to fit into this store is impressive. He has solid standards but seems to rotate so there’s always something new for us to discover every trip. Prices are on par with big box and online, but there’s only one place you get customer service from Teggun. Thank you for providing such great service and memories over the years!

Fantastic establishment! I brought my two Dalmatians in (one slightly reactive) and the owner could not have been kinder. His dog was so sweet, as well and did not reactive to my dog’s reactivity.
It was after we’d taken the pups for a round of putt putt at Peter Pan and so, we thought ice cream would be a good treat for the doggie. We mistakenly thought, two different flavors would be best. When I went In to purchase the same flavor the other dog had, the owner told us to go ahead and just have it. If we lived in Austin, we most definitely would come to Great Outdogs all the time. They literally had everything we could possibly need.

This is probably the best dog store I have ever been to anywhere in the country! The owner is really friendly, helpful, and cares about both his customers and their furry friends! We live in Oklahoma and come to this store every time we’re in town! If you use his dog bath, he also pulls out all the stops with a fan or heater for the humans (depending temp outside), towels, a hair scrubber, and a pitcher for soapy water. Recommend !

I visited Great Outdogs for the first time yesterday and had a great experience! I needed specific treats for my dog’s toy and the owner went above and beyond to help me find the right ones by testing them out in the toy itself. He was also incredibly knowledgeable about different hot spot/itch relief treatments for my pup. Prices were lower than most pet stores around Austin and he had a wide selection of products.
