Lack of Experience, Oversight, and Professionalism

I hired Kathryn Johnson to handle a family enforcement case, not knowing she was a recent law school graduate with no practical experience. Unfortunately, she was given my case without proper oversight from the firm, which became a major problem.

She misplaced important documents multiple times, forcing me to resend them and monitor my billing closely, since the firm charges $36 per email. She did not understand my divorce decree or mortgage-related details, and she never contacted the title company, I had to do most of the work myself. She also failed to consult any experts, despite clear gaps in her knowledge.

One of the most critical missteps was her failure to list herself as an expert witness, which meant I couldn’t recover attorney’s fees even if I had won. She submitted key evidence just five minutes before the hearing, and in court, she couldn’t operate her laptop prompting the judge to ask her why we were even here, since the decree clearly answered the question.

On top of that, she asked me for a 5-star review the same day I hired her, before doing any real legal work. Completely unprofessional.

I spent $18,000 over 12 months with no resolution. The firm promised experience and support and I received neither. If you need strong, knowledgeable legal representation, this is not the place to find it.

Unfortunately, I had a very disappointing experience with Attorney Kathryn Johnson. From the outset, she asked me to leave a 5-star review and praise her—even before I had officially hired her. She also refused to answer even basic, non-legal questions without a paid agreement, which I found off-putting.

I hired her for a straightforward divorce case in November 2024. There were no children or property involved—both parties simply wanted a divorce. Despite this, by February 2025, she had made no progress on my case. No motions were filed, no discovery was done, and yet I was billed $10,000. When I asked what the charges were for, she claimed they were for “discussions” about my case.

Every time I asked for an update, she blamed the opposing counsel, claiming they were unresponsive and causing delays. However, when I spoke directly with the opposing counsel, they confirmed they had been consistently responsive and available.

Eventually, I had no choice but to withdraw her from my case and hire another attorney who was actually able to move the process forward.

If you’re going through the difficult process of divorce, I strongly urge you to consider a different attorney. Save yourself the financial and emotional stress.

After being presented with a possible life altering event, Chelsea took the time to answer all my questions related to the situation that had presented itself and offered great feedback along with solid advice. Stefani Preston-Kryder handling my case couldn’t even answer basic questions and then withdrew just weeks before my trial, leaving me in a terrible position. She didn’t have the decency to pick up a phone and call me after decisions were made on my behalf without discussing them directly with me. It’s clear they don’t care about the people they represent. Do your research—hiring this firm is a mistake you’ll regret.

Walters Gilbreath was recommended to me by other attorneys to be, one of the best, if not the best litigation family law firm in Austin and I can say those attorneys did not steer me wrong. Luke Wallace was the responsible attorney for my case and he was awesome to work with and extremely competent. I think communication is key to an attorney-client relationship and Luke did not disappoint and kept me updated the whole time. Luke is also intelligent, hard working, a good listener, and either knows his stuff or was able to research and find the answer quickly; all attributes necessary to be a great attorney.
