My first time as a new patient for Dr. L. Initial tests and evaluation went well. I saw Dr. L after I was there about an hour. She reviewed the test results, examine my eyes, listened and took a good history of other conditions that I have prevailing. Her office scanned in my previous eye doctors appointments from the last 5 to 8 years.
I thought it was a thorough evaluation; with good suggestions; a prescription for cortisol eye drops; and suggestions for cleaning my eyelids and eyelashes.
Scheduled another appointment for two weeks to follow up and do another evaluation of my optic nerve and a treatment on my eye eyelids and eyelashes.
The staff front desk is very attentive; Santana, Nicole, Riley.

The optometrist was great talked to My son like he has known him for years but he did acknowledge him as a past client that never left. My son and I had an excellent experience at Great Hills with Dr. Do! She did a comprehensive eye exam for both of us and we really felt cared for throughout the entire visit. Dr. Do took the time to explain everything clearly, answered all of our questions with patience, and made sure we were comfortable with every step of the exam. Her professionalism combined with a warm, approachable manner really made the difference for us. The office staff was also courteous and efficient, making the whole appointment smooth from start to finish. We left feeling confident in our eye health and grateful to have found such a knowledgeable and kind optometrist. Highly recommend!

Absolutely AMAZING! Dr Do made me feel like we were old friends and was so sweet, caring and made everything easy. Front desk are absolutely wonderful as well- so nice and knowledgeable and they also made the tests easy to do. Also, not NEARLY as expensive as other places! I don’t have vision insurance and everything including a 10 day supply of contacts (dry eye test, two glasses prescriptions (progressive and regular) and contact script retina scan and that ‘proof’ test where they blow air at your eyes) was less than $300. It would’ve been cheaper without all the stuff I requested, but I’m getting older and need them. Also, De Do is bilingual! (Spanish). LOVE THAT PLACE!!

I visited Great Hills Eye Care and saw Dr. Raymond Carneglia for an eye concern. He prescribed me eye drops, and shortly after using them my eye became red and swollen — an obvious reaction to the medication. When I called the clinic, I was told to stop the drops and schedule a follow-up.
To my surprise, they insisted on charging me $99 for that follow-up, even though the visit was only necessary because of a side effect from medication prescribed at my original appointment. I explained my concern, but they refused to waive the fee.
This experience left me feeling that patient care and responsibility for prescribed treatments are not a priority here. I ended up canceling the follow-up and going to a different clinic for care. I would not recommend this clinic to anyone expecting accountability or fair treatment.

My experience was wonderful! I first was greeted by sweet Hermione. Then Tadeo the tech came and got me. He was patient and kind with me during all the test taking. Then I met Dr Shazeen Ali who is so intelligent and compassionate. None of them knew that I came in extremely stressed that I had a brain tumor bc I was seeing double and blurry. Once I told Dr Shazeen Ali of my worry she immediately made me assured that wasn’t happening. She took the time to show me my eye picture, and explained what it would look like if there was a tumor. The kindness I was showed from start to end was very impressive and made me feel safe. Thank you so very much!

This office and staff understands patient care. I was a first time patient. While waiting for my appointment I was able to witness how compassionate the staff was with assisting someone with disabilities select their favorite glasses. The technicians made kind recommendations and gave honest feedback of which ones looked best on them. Each step of my eye exam, interaction with the doctor and even checkout was handled with kindness. From start to finish, I didn’t feel like another person in line but valued as their new patient.
Highly recommend if you’re looking for a new eye doc!

Extremely personable, from technicians to Dr. Shazeen Ali. By that I mean that they actually listened to my concerns and sought to find solutions to my problems. Just as importantly, they have a lot of equipment that I have not seen before. And having had glasses for more than 65 years, and seeing opticians, optometrists and ophthalmologists every 1-3 years, I have seen a lot. The surprise of all was Dr. Ali calling me personally to further discuss my option on an order. Above and beyond…

Have been at Lone Star Eye for maybe 8 years? Have always had a professional and pleasant experience. Had a scheduled visit today and when I had jury duty they were willing to let me have some flexibility w my appointment. Ended up not needing it and it helped me not to have as much pressure in my day. When I arrived everyone was so nice from my check in to the technician who helped me with my initial testing. Dr. Patel was kind and helped me understand all my scans and reassured me that everything was good. In the past year I’ve had some issues come up for me with my eyes and the team was quick to help see me and sent me to a competent referral when i needed an ophthalmologist (this was last year). Back to my most recent visit I had fun picking out some new frames with Olga and Jessica (great team work!) and settled on some new glasses and contacts. I have a no bridge nose and was really happy to get the expert help I needed to find a great pair that fit my face and were comfortable (I’ve for the longest been at Warby, Quay and Covry and it took sitting with Olga and Jessica to find a really comfy pair!). I came to Lone Star from a friend referral years ago and sharing here to keep it going… good health care is not something to take for granted and appreciate everyone at Lone Star Eye for taking care of me all these years!

Being a native Chicagoan, I still have a hard time getting used to the near-agressive niceness of Austin folks. Dr. Patel didn’t just remedy my eye pain, he took me on a Masterclass journey into the alien world of my own eyeballs. Hilarious, wondrous, truly breathtaking and I enjoyed every second! Walked away thinking that if Dr. Patel had been one of my high school teachers, I might have chosen college instead of the Army. Lone Star looks to be my last stop in old lady eye care, but it should be your first. ️ ⭐

Always a terrific visit to see Dr. Tammy Vo and the staff at Look + See Vision Care. They have an impressive collection of glasses (not the usual brands you run into when visiting your optometrist), the team is unafraid to make smart suggestions (“have you ever considered daily contacts? here’s why —”), and the technology used during a check-up feels extremely modern/up-to-date. Also lobby staff very friendly and helpful. I looked for compatible fishing line for my semi-rim Nike glasses last few months after my son step on them… now it’s solved with their help!!! Fishing line fit perfectly and glasses came to original condition. One glass fall out was my time-to-time problem a while.
So they are solving problems even not directly related to them. They deserve only that type of feedback.
Small business in a shape here how I wish to see it.

Dr. Zhu is the sharpest and most thorough optometrist I’ve seen in my 15 years in Austin. She made specific, personalized recommendations—including customized progressive contact lenses that significantly improved my vision. Their contact lens pricing matched the best online deals I found. The service was excellent, the clinic is spotless and high-tech, and they even use the Optomap machine, so no dilation was needed—a huge plus. 10 out of 10.

I came in for an eye exam and contact lens fitting, and I had a great experience! It was my first time getting an eye exam, and Dr. Matsumoto was very thorough and patient with me. It was also my first time putting on contact lenses, so I really appreciated Dr. Matsumoto’s kindness and the time he took to teach me how to put them on and take them off. The office is also very modern and neat. I will be back!!

Fantastic service received today from the eye Doctor named Lucy. Super professional, super accommodating and understanding regarding my condition. Arboretum Eye Professionals is now Anderson Lane Vision Source! I’ve been coming here for the past 11 years and all I’ve experienced is nothing but the best quality service and exams. I’ve seen three different optometrists over the course of all these years and they’ve been exceptionally great along with office staff. I used to see Dr. Megan Schutte whom was so passionate about her field. She referred me to Mann Eye Insitute to get lasik and after some time I finally decided to do it!!! Well now I’m back to just get my regular eye exams after some dryness and they still have my records and are still delivering exceptional and detailed care! The owner is also so passionate about his field he’s decided to open several locations!!! I am so thankful for them and their passion. Ones vision should always be in the best hands and hands down I can say they are trustworthy and honest people.

2023 Update: I have to drop stars because I am concerned with their changing doctors – every year there is a new doctor and it is a hit or a miss. One year, Dr A is fantastic and the next year she isn’t anywhere to be found. Sometimes my prescription is right on, other years, it isn’t. They need to fix this. [First review] It’s my eye place and I wouldn’t have continued going there if it wasn’t good. Dr. Meghan is amazing and great at her job. I love the staff there, friendly and helpful. The facility is clean and well maintained. Even though they say walk-ins are welcome, I would suggest appointments, makes it easy for everyone. They have great contact lenses in stock. LensCrafters next door have discounts for their patients.

First time client-
I had a wonderful, easy experience. Dr. Kumar is amazing and answered all of my questions. She helped me find the right contact lenses for my lifestyle. I have astigmatism and it’s always hard to get my prescription perfect, but this is probably the best eyesight I’ve had since starting contacts. The front desk staff were very kind, and the technician who did my initial readings Leslie was awesome. I’m testing my daily’s and will likely fill my prescription, super great experience here and highly recommend!

Use to be located next to LensCrafters – moved without telling any of their patients. Made an appointment recently and found out via the new practice aka ATX Optometry.
Will be calling to have my records sent over.

Update from their response. In the 4 email addresses for my family, the only communication received is a direct email from 2021 in response to a question I sent them. This including a scan of junk folder. Their assumption that by sending out email they have notified all their patients is obviously wrong, as we’re not the only ones that have experienced this.

Moved without telling their patients. There are 4 of us here and not one of us received email on it. Tried to track them down from former name Arboretum Eye Professionals. Was told they are Austin Eye Professionals which is what shows up now on Google. The company that answers the phone number is a different provider. Not sure how I’m going to find my eye records, but will be starting over with a different company, which is ok because it was always hit or miss since they had such high eye doctor turn over.

Great service throughout the entire process! The girls up front were so kind and welcoming. The tech was just as friendly while doing my testing before I saw the doctor. Dr. Nizar was super knowledgeable as well as personable and really made sure to explain everything to me in a way I could actually understand! I wish I could give him more than 5 stars!! 10/10 definitely recommend

Catalog of services offered by optometrists in Austin
Comprehensive Eye Exams
A comprehensive eye exam forms the cornerstone of preventative eye care. Optometrists in Austin conduct thorough evaluations of visual acuity, eye coordination, and overall eye health, identifying potential problems early on.
Refraction and Prescription Updates
Accurate vision correction starts with precise refraction and prescription updates. Optometrists use specialized equipment to determine the correct lens power needed to optimize vision, addressing nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.
Contact Lens Fittings and Services
For individuals preferring contact lenses, optometrists provide contact lens fittings and services. This includes selecting the appropriate lens type (soft, hard, specialty), fitting the lenses for comfort and vision, and providing ongoing care and maintenance guidance.
Diagnosis and Management of Eye Diseases
Optometrists are trained to diagnose and manage a wide range of eye diseases, including glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy. Early detection and intervention are crucial for preserving vision.
Pediatric Eye Care
Specialized pediatric eye care is essential for children's visual development. Optometrists perform vision screenings, assess eye coordination, and address childhood eye conditions like lazy eye (amblyopia) and strabismus.
Vision Therapy
For individuals with binocular vision problems – difficulties with eye coordination and focusing – optometrists offer vision therapy. This involves a series of exercises designed to improve eye teaming and visual skills.
Dry Eye Treatment and Management
Dry eye syndrome is a common condition affecting many individuals. Optometrists provide dry eye treatment and management, recommending lubricating drops, lifestyle adjustments, and other therapies to alleviate discomfort and improve tear production.
Low Vision Rehabilitation
Individuals with significant vision loss may benefit from low vision rehabilitation. Optometrists work with patients to maximize remaining vision, recommending assistive devices and adaptive strategies to enhance their independence.
Myopia Control
Increasingly, optometrists are providing myopia control techniques for children, working to slow the progression of nearsightedness and minimize the risk of future eye health complications.
Frequently Asked Questions about Optometrists in Austin
What exactly does an optometrist do?
An optometrist is a healthcare professional who provides primary vision care. They examine eyes for vision problems and eye diseases, prescribe and fit corrective lenses, and provide low-vision rehabilitation. They can also diagnose and manage certain eye conditions, but they are not medical doctors and cannot perform eye surgery.
Why should I get a regular eye exam, even if I think my vision is fine?
Regular eye exams are essential because many eye diseases develop gradually and without noticeable symptoms at first. Early detection and treatment can often prevent vision loss. A comprehensive exam can also reveal signs of systemic health conditions, such as diabetes or high blood pressure, even before other symptoms appear.
What should I expect during a comprehensive eye exam?
A comprehensive eye exam typically includes a review of your medical history, a visual acuity test (using an eye chart), refraction (to determine your prescription), eye muscle movement testing, slit-lamp examination to check for eye diseases, and tonometry to measure eye pressure. Some exams may also include retinal imaging.
How often should I get my eyes examined?
The frequency of eye exams depends on several factors, including your age, family history, and overall health. Generally, adults should get an eye exam every 1-2 years. Children should have their first eye exam around age 3, and then regularly thereafter. Individuals with risk factors for eye diseases, such as diabetes or a family history of glaucoma, may need more frequent exams.
What is the difference between an optometrist and an ophthalmologist?
An optometrist provides primary vision care, while an ophthalmologist is a medical doctor who specializes in eye care. Ophthalmologists can perform eye surgery and treat complex eye diseases. Optometrists often refer patients to ophthalmologists for specialized care or surgical procedures. It’s about different scopes of practice.
Do I need to bring anything to my eye appointment?
It’s helpful to bring a list of any medications you are taking, as well as a copy of your insurance card. If you wear glasses or contact lenses, bring them along so the optometrist can assess their effectiveness. Also, be prepared to answer questions about your medical history and any vision concerns you may have.
What are the different types of contact lenses available?
There’s a wide variety of contact lenses available, including daily disposables, extended wear lenses, multifocal lenses (for presbyopia), and rigid gas permeable lenses. The best type of contact lens for you will depend on your individual needs and the optometrist's assessment.
What does "presbyopia" mean and how can it be corrected?
Presbyopia is the gradual loss of the eye's ability to focus on nearby objects, typically beginning around age 40. It's a natural part of aging. It can be corrected with reading glasses, bifocal lenses, progressive lenses, or multifocal contact lenses.
What are some common eye diseases optometrists screen for?
Optometrists routinely screen for a number of common eye diseases, including glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy. Early detection and management of these conditions can often preserve vision.
What happens if my optometrist detects a problem with my eyes?
If your optometrist detects a problem, they will typically explain the findings and recommend a course of action. This may involve prescribing glasses or contact lenses, administering eye drops, or referring you to an ophthalmologist for further evaluation or specialized treatment. They’re responsible for guiding you toward the best care.
