NOT WORTH IT ANYMORE…. This use to be good 5 star gym even if it was packed but it was good. NOW it sucks ! More then half of the machines are broken if you had to wait back then when all the machines were working and the gym was packed, now you have to wait even longer. I really don’t know what happened with management here. Smith machine has been broken for almost 3 months now along with half of the cable machines. Good luck getting into doing cable flys because it will be a wait for sure. These are only some of the machines that are broken. Most of these over a month now. Seriously thinking of canceling.

This was once a great gym. Now it’s just disgusting and all the machines are broken. For months over 15 machines have been broken and in the mens bathroom all the urinals are broke. Even all of the water fountains are broken. What’s bad is we pay maintenance fees which add up to hundreds of dollars a year that aren’t being used to fix any of the broken equipment and a bathroom you cannot even use.

Update: I’ve increased from 1 to 3 stars. They’ve recently fixed a bunch of machines and seem to be getting better about maintenance overall. There’s still a severe lack of weights though.

————————————————————————

Where are all the weights? I shouldn’t have to go hunt down weights to get a simple workout. Plus, as many others have said, there are a significant amount of machines “on a rest day” and the staff seem to be doing nothing about it. When asked about a status on the broken machines, the front desk staff just said “no” and “it’s because y’all keep breaking them”. Great idea to blame your paying customers and not the negligence of the gym.

Pros: There is a ton of equipment.

Cons: It must always be a “Rest Day” in here with the amount of equipment that’s broken on a regular basis.

Dealers choice. Walk around the gym with a blindfold on – any given row of equipment will have at least one machine broken, and they’re not broken for a short period of time, it’s weeks before things are fixed.

Basic essentials in the gym (look at the photos) water fountains, toilets, sinks, etc. Bathroom doors have broken locks. Half the sinks don’t function properly. Soap dispensers are broken. Since I’ve been coming here, there has never been a time where all 4 fountains in the gym worked properly. You know how crazy that is? It’s a gym…

Just know if you elect to come here, you’re getting a $10 a month gym. They don’t care about the upkeep in the slightest. Only reason I still come here is because it’s the closest gym to me.

Weirdest layout I’ve seen. There are only 2 hydro and 2 regular massage chairs. Showers are being redone due to mold. It is open 24/7. April 2025.

This is by far the best gym I’ve been to. The service they provide is spot on, they’re always cleaning, always dusting, and the showers here are awesome, and big. They’re always cleaning the showers too. The manager is very nice too, and the staff are also very friendly. The equipment is well maintained too. For me, I like a clean gym, and this is why I love this planet fitness location!! Also, this gym, there’s no judgement, everyday people getting fit and healthy, no matter your circumstances!

I’ve been coming to this planet fitness gym for the past 2 years. I had taken a few months off to rest a little and then I started coming back 5 weeks ago. I love the new machines and the upgrades on all the new equipment. However, I would like to formally make a complaint about a worker here. Her name is Elma. Ever since I first encountered her she has been nothing but rude and unhospitable. One time I had a guest coming and told her that my guest was in the parking lot on the phone and would be in a few minutes. I had informed her of the situation but she said that she wouldn’t let him in unless I was there showing proof of his entrance. Keep in mind I have a Black Card Membership and I understand safety precautions but her demeanor was really rude. It felt as if I was trying to sneak someone in or I wasn’t supposed to be trusted. So I just let that go and did what she said and went on with my work out. Now today, I wanted to use the hydro bed and noticed that one was empty. So I asked if I could use it. She had responded that someone was using it even though one was complete unoccupied. So confirms with her coworker. So I go back and get a closer look at the timer and it’s set at zero however, I noticed the sign on the screen showing that it’s out of order. So I got back and say I didn’t know that the one that was unoccupied was out of order. She immediately smirks at me and smiles. How rude is that? She could have just told me that one was occupied and the other was out of order. Then she has the audacity to smirk and me and smile. This is unprofessional and unnecessary. You are being unhelpful and rude. Also, I would like to add the fact that I saw her let a member come in without signing in. I have noticed that people are coming in and using other people’s accounts or something bc I saw a person try and buy a water bottle on their account but couldn’t bc the QR code they were using didn’t match the picture in the profile with the person at hand. The gym is already over crowded and if there are people using hydro beds and massage chairs when they are not even paying for the membership then why should I be paying for it for the past 2 years. I would like this to be addressed with the staff at hand. Why should be sharing a gym with people who are not even supposed to be there? And how does the meter in my planet fitness app only show 2 bars of capacity when every machine is being used? Either, the system is incorrect or not everyone is being checked in and the company is losing out on money

I love this Planet fitness…. Mr. Tim, the boss help me try to fix my cart and Valeria did help as well plus they are outstanding … keeping the planet fitness always clean .She helped me put my suitcase in storage and helped out the cart as well. Valeria make sure my property is taken care of nobody steals from me … What would we do without this team work…. Very happy to be here. and Joel is helping the customers by recognizing that the door needs to be open for people who are handicapped… he stepped it up….

I noticed Fernanda goes out of the way cleaning this place so thoroughly. I feel like this is a home to me. She really does allot around here….

Initially, I rated this Planet Fitness three stars at best, due in part to the poor upkeep of the machines and the cleanliness of the facility; however, after visiting the Planet Fitness located at 1819 S Pleasant Valley Rd. Austin, TX 78741, it quickly jumped to 4 stars. This obviously doesn’t bode well for the above-referenced facility.

What helped determine the increase in stars was the immediate response to my complaint about what happened on my second visit here. The manager emailed to offer his apology and asked how he could make up for the poor service I encountered from a couple of his staff members. His apology was enough for me, considering I don’t live in Austin and was visiting.

The manager’s concern for the customer goes a long way in my opinion and determination of my reviews. I commend the manager for his attentiveness and concern for his clients. I recommend that he clean his store with a little more elbow grease.

The gym itself was relatively clean, although several machines were out of order and parts of the ladies’ locker room were roped off and unusable. However, the main reason for my three-star review is the extremely disappointing behavior of the front desk staff. We were visiting this location, and the difference between here and my home gym was striking. At my home gym, the staff are always warm, welcoming, and friendly. In contrast, when we walked into this gym, both the young woman and the gentleman at the front desk were so absorbed in their personal conversation that they didn’t even acknowledge us. The young woman continued to discuss her personal business while we checked in, never offering so much as a greeting. When we left, the same thing happened—she was sitting behind the counter, still talking, and neither staff member bothered to look up, thank us, or say goodbye. For a visitor, that lack of even basic courtesy and professionalism was disappointing and left a very negative impression of this location.

Big Tex is my favorite gym in Austin, for many reasons, and I’ll tell you them all. The people, the equipment, the staff are all top notch!

The staff is always easy to talk to and quick to help. They are supportive and genuinely so helpful and really support everyone’s training and/competition goals.

The gym itself has a very very strong community, and both the members and the staff make me happy to be here every day.

Regarding equipment, you won’t find better or more high quality barbells. Squat bars, deadlift bars, regular power bars, a huge variety of specialty bars and equipment. There’s a huge variety of machines and dumbbells too. Also calibrated plates, bumper plates and good ole standard plates.

I really can’t explain how much I love this gym! The drop in pass is so easy, $10. If you want a real training experience, check it out.

Big Tex Gym is the real deal. The free weights and specialty equipment here cover everything you need for serious strength training, and there’s plenty of space to move without feeling cramped. The atmosphere is focused but respectful. Everyone’s here to put in work, and that energy pushes you to train harder. Sophie at the front desk is a huge asset too; she’s knowledgeable, professional, and always quick to help if something comes up. If you’re serious about lifting, this is the spot in Austin.

Update: I’m genuinely thrilled to see that the Eagle Cybex leg extension machine has finally been repaired, with a brand new seat, an upgraded shin pad, and an adjustable wheel to fine-tune shin pad placement. Thank you to the Big Tex staff for addressing this issue; you may not realize just how much this means to some of us, even if the process took longer than hoped. My only remaining wish is that equipment maintenance continues to be a priority moving forward. Once again, thank you so much!

I’m making this review with great hesitation, but alas, it must be done. Big Tex seriously lacks a proper leg extension machine. The only halfway decent one they had, tucked away in the small corner of the gym next to the Arsenal vertical leg press (“Eagle Fitness Systems by Cybex”), has been broken for months. The metallic adjustment handle is snapped off completely, making it impossible to set the pad to the correct height for shin contact. Without that adjustment, the machine is essentially unusable (only for those whose legs are long enough). This impediment virtually leaves the gym without a decent, functional leg extension machine, which is truly saddening. Leg extensions are absolutely crucial for fully targeting the quads, especially the rectus femoris, a muscle that squats and other compound leg movements can’t effectively isolate to stimulate hypertrophy. The few other leg extension machines in the gym are poorly designed (from subpar manufacturers), with poor resistance profiles, limited range of motion, or insufficient weight capacity, making it nearly impossible to train the quads maximally to stimulate growth. Until this is fixed, I’ll be doing my leg workouts at Planet Fitness instead; at least they have relatively decent leg extensions. On a final note, it’s truly disheartening to see that Big Tex’s sister gym, Iron Forge, is receiving more special attention with the equipment from Panatta.

I’ve been to a lot of gyms over the years, but this one stands out as one of the best. The facility is always clean, the equipment is top-notch and well-maintained, and the atmosphere is super motivating. What really makes the difference though is the staff—they’re friendly, knowledgeable, and genuinely care about helping you reach your goals. Whether you’re just starting out or a seasoned lifter, there’s something here for everyone. Classes are great, and there’s never a long wait for machines. Highly recommend this place to anyone serious about fitness or just looking to level up their routine!

The gym is close to where I’m located. Due to me moving a lot they accommodate more with the fact that they don’t require month to month contracts. They also have powerlifting calibrated plates. Free water and hygienic restrooms best part 24/7 for members.

Big Tex is GOATED very great staff they remember you and what you talked about like 2 weeks ago and are able to keep up with all the members so it’s great to have people that care and even check up on you. I always feel welcome and you’ll only ever get support in here. Lots of kilogram plates to go around which is a huge bonus. A huge variety of equipment so I can hit everything I want and how I want and being 24/7 with a shower is extremely convenient and it’s not a raggedy shower either I’d go to crunch and the floors all mucky and there’s no hot water or pressure and that’s a commercial gym. Having really good bars is great too and well taken care of. The people and the community are great and can always vibe together it’s always just smiles at Big Tex and everyone will scream for you when you’re hitting a pr. The front desk girls are the sweetest, care about you and will have some great convos with you and aren’t gonna be dry so it’s fun to hangout at too. The WiFi is great so if you need to work on your computer you’ll be taken care of fosho. Really good saunas, I don’t use them but they’re very nice. There’s also a kitchen with a fridge and microwave along with an air fryer so you can cook and store a little food for later and there are couches in there too so if you need to lounge or need a spot to keep your kid while you workout it’s a good area. The owners, Rob and Esther are pretty cool too you can sometimes catch them at the gym and talk to them for a bit and they won’t run off immediately saying they’re busy. All around this is pretty much a perfect gym it has everything you could need.

Great range of equipment & facilities. Love the layout out of the spin room. A well set up functional training area.
For those who like squash, very few gyms have squash courts these days, but this one does.
Lots of work out machines; multiple cardio choices and resistance well covered too. There is also a wide selection of free weights/squat racks.
As a fitness professional I would endorse this training environment for all ages and ability levels. Something for everyone.
Good standard of hygiene and maintenance.
Shout out to Ken, doing a phenomenal job on reception!

I’d like to take a moment to recognize Aaron for his outstanding service and professionalism at LA Fitness. From the moment I walked in, Aaron made me feel welcomed, respected, and genuinely motivated to pursue my fitness goals. He brings a unique combination of positive energy, deep knowledge, and an authentic passion for helping people — qualities that truly set him apart.

Aaron consistently goes above and beyond, whether it’s answering questions, offering training advice, or simply making sure the gym environment is clean, safe, and supportive for everyone. He’s approachable, encouraging, and has a natural ability to connect with members of all experience levels.

It’s rare to find someone who not only excels at their job but also inspires those around them. Aaron is a true asset to the LA Fitness team, and his leadership, customer service, and dedication should absolutely be recognized.

Please consider this a strong commendation for a team member who clearly embodies the LA Fitness mission and makes the experience better for everyone who walks through the door.

I love working out here. The staff are great, very helpful at the front desk. Margo was awesome helping me troubleshoot and solve an issue I was having with my mobile app! A good mix of machines and free weights, and a nice turf area in the center of the gym for warming up and doing more sports specific exercises. In my opinion, better than Golds in South Austin.

I have been going here for a few years after going to the Anderson location. They are both good, but the equipment at this one is my favorite. They have high-quality squat racks, a weighted sled, tire flip machine, glute bridge machines, trap bar, and TRX bands and balls, and battle ropes. These are not always common, and some of my favorite equipment. After trying a few other gyms nearby, this is one of the cleanest and best maintained gyms in the area. They also keep the music at an appropriate level for where most people use headphones, unlike other gyms nearby. The sauna and indoor pool are great too. Highly recommend.

Pros: racquetball courts, friendly front desk staff, the ability to bring a guest for free.

Cons: outdated machines that are constantly broken for weeks at a time, making most workouts impossible to finish. Several of the bathroom sinks and toilets have also been broken for at least a month. It’s insanely quiet, no music playing, it’s the least motivating gym I’ve ever been to. It feels like working out in an old library. It’s also the first gym I’ve been to where there’s no staff ever actively cleaning, putting weights back, doing anything on the floor and it shows.

My husband and I were visiting Austin and needed a nearby gym for the week so we thought we’d give this one a try! It turns out it has it ALL! We were able to swim laps, sit in the hot tub and use the sauna which felt amazing . On another day we used the weights area and we were blown away by the machines and weights available . We both got such an awesome work out and used machines we hadn’t ever seen before in other gyms we’ve been to! If we lived here this would most definitely be our gym!

I have worked out at many LA fitnesses in various states over the years.
This particular LA fitness seems to suffer from a lack of access to machine service folks. It’s actually quite shocking at any given time, how many of the machines have a sign that says they’re scheduled for service. They often tend to be the most critical machines. Today, I noticed four machines with scheduled for service signs in just one area of the gym. Who is the manager of this gym? Are they even trying?

Be sure to bring your lease with you when you
redeem your “free day pass” or be charged half a months dues. Gym looked fine. Just tired of dealing with corporate greed.

EDIT 07/17: Following up to note a few things here.

1. I absolutely was not able to use the pass, despite the reply to this review. This was the most frustrating part of the experience, the lack of human judgment in sales/service. I worked in sales for six years. It’s so wild to see someone not do anything but follow procedure. No judgement at all. I offered other ways of showing I moved there and was looking for a new home gym. I understand the procedure, I just think it’s worth 2 stars. Low effort protocol. Might as well not even have a human at the door.

2. While the website does list that government/legal proof of local residence is required, it might be nice if a quick reminder was given on the email they send. I’ve attached it here. If they can take the time to code it to include my first name, a few bullet points about what will be required to enter would make sense to me… it would also be a quick fix that I’m sure would stop a lot of people like me from paying an inconvenient day pass fee. Something tells me that’s not an oversight. I just think it’s a 2 star practice.

Renovated several months ago, and this is one of the best spots to workout at. Clean facility with a great General Manager (Brian), and an especially top notch Assistant GM (Mike), with a great professional staff that is warm and welcoming to the gym members.

I would know, as I’m a former staff member of the Gold’s Gym on 6th Street (2022 & 2023 to early 2024), and witnessed the complete difference (which was so needed) that Mike (who was the GM there for a couple years) brought to that Gold’s Gym. The previous GM and staff, had no standards set, some the front desk personnel would let certain members workout in the gym after operation hours, some trainers didn’t fulfill the workout plans that they promised their clients, some employees just showed up to get paid, screwed up the parking situation for both members and the Gold’s organization, and did little to nothing but complain, bicker and gossip about who was sleeping with who. Mike cleaned all of that garbage up, expeditiously.

So when the GM of Highland (Brian) brought Mike aboard his team as the Assistant GM, I was ecstatic. Mike was the piece they needed to add, in order to help support the great staff they already have, and help Highland become leagues above what it was in previous years, prior to Brian and Mike teaming up.

The atmosphere and energy of Gold’s on Highland is inspirational and beautiful to see. The GMs bring an air of respect, care and authenticity, that compliments the legacy and standards of Gold’s Gym, and its members.

Whether you’re an Austinite, or a visitor looking for a great spot to do your workout at, this is the place. Gold’s Gym Highland….Five stars! And highly recommended.

Not the best experience. The guy at the front desk working on 09/29/2025 around noon, was completely rude. I came in after having a great convo with a sales rep on the location. Just moving to Austin in the next couple weeks is already a hassle, however I wasn’t told to bring any type of local information to prove I’m moving here. Considering it’s a gym and not a tax prep or apartment I was surprised. He made me go back to my car twice to retrieve my ID, which is out of state because it takes a while to receive a new ID, then asked a bill ???

Regardless, waste of time to sit on the phone with a rep who is gassing this place up like it’s better than Equinox or Lifetime. I honestly just liked the convenience of multiple locations and I only received a free pass because of the sales rep. Other than that, now I’m not even sold on wanting to step foot in this location given the hassle. It’s a gym, at least provide better information and a bit more friendly service. Guess I’ll just decide between Lifetime and Equinox – more private, better equipment, and way more friendly staff members.

I also don’t need a generic response from anyone, I read the reviews and this gym is clearly fine with sticking up for themselves when it comes to local IDs. The issue is receiving a call from a rep, who did not state this information nor is it in the email. Regardless, of what the website says – your reps should be able to provide information and reconfirm. Especially, when I asked twice if I would need a form of ID and that mine was clearly out of state the rep confirmed it would be fine. Plenty of other gyms so it’s not an issue lol, but the response and treatment and overall experience not up too par considering it’s not the Ritz Carlton. I’ve had a past membership as well for five years in NYC and LA and have been too many in Texas. It’s simply this location.

Brian Perry, the General Manager, is unfit to be managing this gym. I came in eligible for a free day pass with a valid local ID, and after reading the gym’s policy showing I was in fact eligible to work out for free, he still denied me access. Instead, he called the cops, claiming I was “harassing” him, and demanded that I leave.

There was absolutely no reason to be treated this way. His behavior was unnecessary, unprofessional, and overly dramatic for someone in a management position at Gold’s.

If anyone still plans on working out here, I strongly recommend bringing a printed copy of the gym’s policy to protect yourself against this General Manager’s made-up rules.

Haven’t been to the gym in a very long time, but it feels nice to get back into a routine and improve my health. Gold’s Gym has provided a pretty good experience so far, although I should take advantage of their programs and classes more, it’s just nice to have somewhere with the necessary equipment and decent facilities to use.

The workers here at 5 AM are wonderful. I see them going around and cleaning/ managing/ working and doing an amazing job. If I was giving th m a rating they would receive 6 stars out of 5. Such wonderful people.

The remodel that happened a while ago was completely over sold. The newer area of the gym looks like a great space to train, but I really question the quality of the equipment. It looks great for a home gym, but after another year, I feel like it’s going to not be as nice due to wear and tear of everyone using the equipment. I also don’t understand how there isnt more tricep extension machines or even a hip thrust machine. The interior aesthetic is jarring. The fake brick walls surrounding the free weight section is tacky, and the green wall that mimics the OG Gold Gym is an eyesore for this space. The building has such a unique layout that can be used to create an interesting space, but it feels wrong.

Overall , it is okay
It hast the exact same equipment as LA Fitness and of course it is cleaner and more reliable . However they seem to lack ab equipment like they only have two abs cruncher that are not even good.
Plus they don’t have any decline bench to crunches
The cold plunge, sauna, steam room and pool are great and this is mostly the reason I am coming here
But if you don’t need the cold plunge just stick to LA Fitness
They have way more machines and bench press, like it is ridiculous to only see 4 while at LA Fitness there is at least 5 flat bench and 2 incline and 1 decline
They could do a better job with the machines

I was a dedicated Lifetime Fitness member for over six years, but I recently made the decision to leave and I feel compelled to explain why.

For a club that is among the most profitable in the country, the condition of my location has become unacceptable. The bathrooms and showers are consistently dirty, often littered with trash, razors, plastic bags, gum, and hair. The locker rooms are poorly maintained and unhygienic, which makes for a really unpleasant experience. On top of that fees continue to increase while the experience actually decreases! 70% of the people are in the weight lifting section yet it makes up 10% of the entire gym and despite constant request for more equipment or rearranging they don’t do anything!

The equipment situation is even worse. Not only is there not enough weightlifting equipment, but what’s there is frequently broken or unsafe. Just last week, I sat down on a leg extension machine and the cracked padding actually cut into my leg—I had to place a towel over it just to use it. A couple of weeks before that, a bolt came loose on a flat bench mid-set, causing the pad to slide—an obvious safety hazard that could have led to injury.

What makes this more frustrating is that other Lifetime locations I’ve visited are immaculate, well-maintained, and professional. This one is the complete opposite. Despite multiple emails to the concierge and conversations with management, nothing ever seems to improve.

I switched to Golda literally across the street and at a fraction of the cost—is cleaner, safer, and better run. I was paying nearly $200 a month at Lifetime and receiving less in terms of cleanliness, equipment quality, and overall standards.

I truly wanted to stay. I’ve loved the brand and the community for years, but the lack of upkeep, hygiene, and accountability at this location made it impossible to justify continuing. Fees continue to increase and they improve absolutely nothing.

I normally don’t leave reviews, but I feel like others should know about my experience with Lifetime Fitness.

After signing up, I got a call offering a complimentary swim lesson. The rep scheduled me, but I was never able to attend. The following month, I was charged $100 for lessons I never signed up for or agreed to.

Since then, I’ve tried to resolve this with the club. I spoke with the general manager, who told me the credit would be placed on my account—but I explained that I’m moving out of the country and pregnant, so I cannot use the lessons. Despite this, I’ve now spoken with three different people over the past three weeks, and every time I’m told they will follow up by email or phone. I’ve had to chase them myself each time, and I still have no resolution.

It’s extremely frustrating to be charged for something I never authorized and then to be refused a refund despite my situation. I honestly expected better communication and customer service from a company of this size.

A place for family, exercise, and luxurious experiences. Most of the staff here are patient (but hey, we’re all human and have off days). I always feel safe when my kids are swimming around and things seem cleaner through the gym compared to other gyms. The kids space is made for 2.5 hours of good fun, they also have classes for kids too! Our family is improving because we all signed up here. Great community!

Cons:
– I’ve seen the young lifeguard supervisor be unnecessarily rude to other members three times now.
– change rooms are high humidity

Pros:
– The saunas & steam rooms are great – high temperature, & a lot of healthy members attend this location.
– Warm pool is great when it doesn’t have debris that needs to be filtered (physically, not chemically) from all the children

When I joined Lifetime they told me membership fees were not going to rise. I just noticed (after 4 years) they have been increasing my dues without telling me even with an e-mail! The South Location Leadership especially under Adam Curry is horrific-they do want to kick out existing members by increasing dues to bring more expensive new members (but know that you’ll be kicked out soon with overcharged membership dues) The jacuzzi and gym area is always overcrowded. Jacuzzi area is almost disgusting. Don’t waste your money here..There are much nicer gyms around.

•This location closes at 9pm half of the week. It has not been honoring its name at all, for years now, with zero plans to change that and do better.
This is NOT about a shortage of labor, as their night shift staff typically get there around 11pm. This is about corporate greed.
Please honor the name of the business, or start prorating the monthly fee to reflect being 16-Hour Fitness Fri-Sat-Sun into Monday morning.

•The locker room bathrooms are as moldy, and reeking of piss as any hallway bar bathroom you would find on Dirty 6th, despite being miles from it. They are never anything close to “clean”. Hold your breath while you use them for number one, regardless of the time of day. It’s a permanent stench.

•The condition of the machines here is pretty pathetic, as I can’t think of another chain gym in town with worse equipment; many of the machines padding is more duct tape than not duct tape. 2-6 bolts max on each torn up machine, and the padding could simply be taken off and reupholstered, easily. Take them in to fix!
STOP DUCT TAPING THEM TOGETHER

Management, It’s pretty clear what aspects need to be fixed.
Please don’t reply with a genetic response suggesting an email to say the same things already mentioned.

I love love love this gym !!!! The place is huge and well spaced out. Always smiling faces at the front desk. All the employees seem to care for you and even give you a nice little motivational saying before and after your work out. I love that there’s always enough bar bells to use. They have a lot of equipment and there’s always someone working there walking around ready to help you if you need it. Also USE YOUR ONE TIME FREE TRAINER. Mine changed my life. All employees rule but OJ at the front especially has always been very helpful to me. Love this gym so much.

The gym area has everything I need and as the place is open 24 hours, I can come any time. It’s got potential to be a great gym, but needs some TLC to get there. New coat of paint, less depressing lights. Better maintenance on almost all machines that use weight stacks. Lots of missing grips and machines that could use a tune up.

Sauna and pool area need a DEEP clean.

Not a horrible gym, just has potential to be a great one with a little bit of extra work.

It’s one of the cleanest, most well organized chain gyms I’ve been to. Everyone puts back their weights, and all the equipment is well maintained. Locker rooms were clean. Had all the standard free weights, cable machines, and weight machines you find in most gyms as well as a stretch area with some kettle bells and medicine balls.

I was visiting Austin on vacation and paid $60 for a one week pass. Pretty good deal, I would say.

Update: This review is from 2024, when Mike (the previous GM) was overseeing this Gold’s location. Mike has since moved on to a better spot within the Gold’s Gym company.

Located in downtown Austin, a good place to workout at. Clean facility with a top notch General Manager and a great professional staff, that is warm and welcoming to the gym members.

I would know as I am a former staff member of this Gold’s Gym (2022 & 2023 to early 2024), and could see the complete difference (that was so needed) in which the new team has brought to Gold’s Gym. The previous GM and staff, had no standards set, some front desk personnel would let certain members workout in the gym after operation hours, some trainers didn’t fulfill the workout plans that they promised their clients, some employees just showed up to get paid, screwed up the parking situation for both members and the Gold’s organization, and did little to nothing but complain, bicker and gossip about who was sleeping with who.

The current GM (William aka Mike) and staff are leagues above what I saw back in 2022. The atmosphere and energy of Gold’s on 6th is inspirational and beautiful to see. The GM has banned disrespectful and ignorant former members that had no business being at the gym in the first place, as well as fired or let go of former staff members who were more of a liability than they were an asset to Gold’s Gym. As certain trash staff members left, a lot of the trashy clients followed right along with them (not surprising), and thank goodness.

Whether you’re an Austinite, or a visitor, Gold’s Gym on 6th street is a good place to try out.

Pretty solid gym. Standard gold’s gym equipment, though they do have 2 free-motion cable machines. I go in the afternoon and it’s pretty quiet, I almost never have to wait for equipment. Cleaning staff is really good. The GM is pretty friendly, he even gave me some tips on my bench.

Used to be the best gym in town for guys, despite the homeless outside.

They cleaned that up with security.

Then they lowered the temperature on the sauna. It’s barely enough to get a real full body response.

Everything else is still here. You won’t make friends, but there are weights and bikes.

Personally, after the sauna got turned down, it’s time to look elsewhere.

I travel a lot for work and this is one of my favorite gyms in the US. I love the open multi-floor layout, all the equipment is solid and just what you need, and the people are great. I’m not much of a talker and even I know a lot of people’s names now just from how friendly and nice everyone is. A lot of people who workout here have been doing it a while and are very nice and don’t mind helping you out or giving you some advice if you ask for it. It’s very motivating being around other people who are already really good at something you’re wanting to get better at yourself, especially when they’re cool and friendly.
Speaking of that, the staff here is awesome. Casey has made me feel welcome and helped me out since day one (been here about a month and a half now), and if you ever get the chance to check this place out definitely go up to the front desk and ask if Mykrin “Mike” can schedule you a starter training session. I just started doing it and the difference is huge. Mykrin is super-personable and friendly, really knows his stuff, and will show you how to get exactly where you’re wanting to be. If you’re new or have been going to gyms on your own for a while like me, checking out a trainer is definitely the way to go: having an expert right there telling you what steps to take and helping you through it is exactly what I wish I had been doing from the beginning. I have one more day here before I’m back to travelling, but I really wish I could stay in Austin a little while longer just for this gym. Hopefully I’ll be back, been a great experience

I’m honestly surprised by some of the low reviews—this Gold’s Gym location is solid. The team that signed me up was fantastic (wish I remembered their names!) and super helpful from the start.

The gym itself is huge, clean—not just “clean for a gym,” but actually clean—and packed with equipment. There’s a full cardio cinema, tons of machines and free weights, and everything is well-maintained. One of the nicer surprises? People actually re-rack their weights here.

I’ve been going around 9am when it’s nearly empty, which is perfect. I’ve heard it gets crowded after 4:30pm, so plan accordingly. The layout has multiple tiers and can feel like a bit of a maze at first, but after a couple of visits it’s easy to navigate—and staff were super kind in pointing me in the right direction.

Also love the mix of people here—variety of ages and fitness levels. Overall, it’s been a great experience and definitely better than the current rating suggests.

I recently visited Gold’s Gym nearby and was really impressed. The staff was super friendly, and the equipment was top-notch. I especially liked the standing hamstring curl machine. Terrible experience – cancelled due to constantly being caught in the background of people filming in the locker room. After I cancelled membership I was advised no more payments were due and access was no more. Now they’re trying to bill me random charges and trying to make it look like I was using the gym by manually logging in my account . Best part is the day they logged me in I was traveling!

Manager is refusing to correct the issue even when I have it all documented.

This has been my gym for a very long time. It was great. People are respectful and staff was helpful.
For the last year it has become increasingly uncomfortable with more than half the treadmills broken, the women’s area dirty and with broken sinks, and no working scale. I have repeatedly reported these issues every month for over a year. No change. It used to be such a great place. I will be ending my membership this month. RRR

I love the Golds brand, been a member for a few years now. But this South location needs some serious remodeling, they do have a decent amount of machines but this place deserves the same remodeling that the Golds in Cedar Park received.

Start with the tiny Sauna, work your way to the outdated restrooms/lockers, then head over to the gym area and maybe clear an area for the turf with the weight push cart, and maybe switch out some of the old machines like leg extensions and others and move things around a bit. Maybe throw some coverings on the walls like the Cedar Park location.

Would it be too much to ask for a water fountain with a water bottle dispenser?

Same Dirty Band-aids and trash found in sauna and showers!!

I have been a long time gold member since I moved to Austin back in 2020. This gym was one of the first but I have slowly disagreed with the hygiene.

There have been a few times I have found the same trash in hygiene, critical areas like the showers and washrooms & saunas. I go to the Gym at 5-6am when it is supposed to be “fresh” and just opened for the day.

I draw the line with dirty Band-Aids, and am currently moving my golds home.

The attached photos was taken around 5:30am (it’s the same trash from the day before)

Probably the worst run gym I’ve ever been to. I am not exaggerating when I say these pics were all taken on the same day. I ended up walking around seeing how many out of order signs I could find like it was an Easter egg hunt. You can probably still go in there and the out of order signs will all still be there, no matter what date you are reading this. The WiFi is unusable. The sauna is broken half the time, the refuse to fix anything. Been here for a year and a half and I think it’s finally time to switch. I have asked them many times to fix stuff and this is where we are at now. I went to LA fitness down the road and it’s 10x better so now I will try to bring as many people from golds to LA with me before I cancel my membership out of spite. They either don’t have a manager or they are wildly overpaid because they are never there. Sauna is always broken and is never even very hot anymore, they never fix equipment when it breaks, hours could be better. One thing I will say though is that personal trainer Daniel is dope. They should give him a raise, because he is the only good thing about this place. Don’t go to this gym (unless you want a personal training session with Daniel).

Perfectly fine gym for $30-$35 a month. Machines are older but 90% of them are working fine. If you can’t get a good workout in here that’s a you problem. Some of these reviews are people being extremely over dramatic.

Most of the gyms in the area have worse hours and cost 2-3x more, minimum. Not the best golds in the Austin area and I’d honestly happily pay $50/mo for newer equipment. But whatever. Serves its purpose.

I chose Gold’s Gym because of the many locations, which is convenient for me as my job requires traveling all over town. While this isn’t my usual gym, I visited this location yesterday due to a nearby appointment. Unfortunately, I was disappointed by the condition of this gym. It’s clear the facility and equipment are in serious need of upgrades. Many machines, especially those for leg workouts, seemed outdated and poorly maintained—some hadn’t been serviced or oiled in a while, which affected my workout. Based on this experience, I wouldn’t recommend this gym.

The ATX Review

** I have not been paid or compensated for any reviews I post. All reviews are written with what I see and experience. **

Dear Austin community,
This review is for Gold’s Gym Ben White location. My initial impressions when I walked up to the building were reminiscent of an old department store. The outside of the building looks like it hasn’t been washed in years. The signage is dull and unimpressive.
Walking in, you are greeted by some of the friendliest employees that always have a smile on their face. They truly seem to love chatting with customers about their day.
The inside of the gym, at first glance, is decent. It’s quite large for a gym and there seems to be plenty of equipment to use for whatever your goals. Walking around, you see 10+ machines (cardio, weight, etc..) that are broken and not usable. Many of these have been this way for 3+ months now. Many customers have tried contacting local management about this with no replies which makes this reviewer wonder if management even cares. It doesn’t seem so. Going around the gym to inspect each machine is full of disappointment. Rust, cracks, disrepair of many things in this gym. One should be glad gyms aren’t inspected by the health department or this location would shut down immediately. Cleaning supplies like paper towels and disinfectant are a gamble as to whether or not you will have them for the day.
The locker rooms are not much better than the rest of the gym. The sauna is constantly broken, it looks as if it hasn’t been cleaned in over a year, and wooden boards are broken. You can feel the bacteria in the air. Which makes you wonder how often the showers and toilets are cleaned (rather seldom from the looks of things).
The music being played over the loud speaker is extremely loud and obnoxious. If you can hear it over your own headphones, it’s time to turn it down or off. Customers like to listen to their own music and not be interrupted by whatever they decide to blare that day.
Overall this business gets a D- when compared to the other Gold’s gyms in the area. But I hope things do get better here and wish management the best of luck in turning it around.

Update 8/8/2024 – The men’s sauna still has not been cleaned and machines are all still broken.

Update 8/16/2024 – They have a bad habit of not opening up in the mornings and today was no exception. Machines are still broken. Place is still not cleaned or stocked. Attempts to reach out to management has been unsuccessful.

Update 10/20/2024 – Since bringing these issues to management’s attention, nothing has been done. The sauna hasn’t been cleaned, most of the same machines are still not working and the music is still deafening. It’s a wonder this place hasn’t been shut down yet. They should count themselves lucky they don’t have to follow Texas health code.

Gym is a real value. employees aren’t miserable like other gyms and whoever is running the place knows how to run this type of brand; needs to be promoted to train all the GMs nationwide if Gold’s Brand wanted to capitalize on re strengthening their Brand again; which in my opinion has dropped but not here
